Weight Gain

Ok I have already gained 12 lbs :( I am not happy. I have told some close friends about it and all they can do is accuse me of over eating. Before I got pregnant I had lost 21 lbs and was eating very healthy although I had taken out carbs. I have read that carbs are important for baby so I added them back in. That and I do occasionally indulge in my cravings but I am still healthier then I was before I lost the 21 lbs. I just feel very frustrated I have not been to the doc yet so I have no idea if this is a singleton pregnancy or not. Twins run very strong in my family so I am hoping this is the answer but if not I just feel like I am getting fat very quick. I look like I am 6 months pregnant at 9 weeks :( I just needed to vent and hopefully get more than just the obvious advise of eating healthy.

Re: Weight Gain

  • I'm up about 7lbs, but I am carrying twins. You're probably pretty bloated (I definitely am), and don't forget that your blood volume increases among other things, so it may not be true gains. Have you tried keeping a food diary (myfitnesspal is great) to see how much you're actually eating each day vs how much you're burning?

  • Were the carbs that you added back in nutrient dense carbs like starchy veggies, fruits, sweet potato and whole grains? Might help to make sure you are getting the most out of your carbs if you are concerned about extra weight. It might not impact weight gain, but at least you will be getting the most out of your meals. All that fiber should help with the bloat too.
  • I have gained a few pounds as well. I generally don't eat much bread, however that seems to be #1 for me as far as keeping morning sickness away. I also completely went off my low FODMAP diet I follow and I've had ginger ale though I don't generally drink soda.

I honestly don't think it's a big deal so long as you start watching it and make better choices in 2nd trimester once morning sickness is gone.
  • I've been really nervous about gaining too much weight.  My main sanity that I'm going to stick with is that our bodies are doing an amazing thing growing a little one inside.  Be kind to yourself if you gain a little more weight than you want, and just make little healthy changes if you're not happy.

So far I've been able to maintain, but the food aversion/ms has definitely been contributing to that. I plan to start tracking again on My Fitness Pal once I can get back to a normal diet (read I can eat something other than random breakfast foods, cheese, and pizza).

I would say to be on watch for beverages. Try ginger tea in lieu of ginger ale to avoid all the sugar.  Flavored water in lieu of too much juice, etc.

I'd be up for starting a side bar discussion on healthy choices similar to the fitness discussion...

    Nov16 Siggy Challenge:

  • Try whole grain carbs, whole grain breads and pasta, veggies count as a carb, sweet potatoes instead of rice, brown rice. Eat high protein snacks such as Greek yogurt or peanut butter, veggies with dip, fruit is also good in moderation
  • Thank you everyone some great advise. I just can't wait for my appointment my doctor won't see anyone until they are 10 weeks so I feel like I'm being tortured not having someone to answer my questions lol. By this time with my dd I had had 2 appointments so this is just crazy to me. I have not been eating whole grains when it comes to my carbs so maybe that is part of it. All that white sugar and wheat is never good for anyone and apparently this fact fell out of my pregnant brain. I was glad for the reminder as far as everything else I feel like I have been eating pretty well. Maybe if I cut all of that kind of carb out it will help me even out a little and stop gaining.
  • I think when you've been dieting and loosing weight, then you stop it come back that much easier. I am sure I've gained more than I wanted to at this point but like you going from low card to adding cards your body just like packs it on. As long as you are making healthy choices the number on the scale is just that. A number.
  • I just sent my hubby out to buy a scale bc I'm feeling so uncomfortable in my skin. I haven't weighed myself since the beginning of December so I don't have a starting weight per say. I've worked out 3-4 days per week forever, but stopped when I got a positive bc of mild cramping and light spotting. I'm just afraid I've gained too much already!

  • I have gained about 6 pds but am also carrying twins. I would say you are absolutely fine. You need to eat for the little one growing.  ;) If it is still a concern talk to your doctor about it. Good luck momma! Your doing great!! :)
  • I also gained about 12lbs so far (11 weeks), then lost  7 (going to guess HG), but my weight gain skyrockets in the second trimester. I gained 60lbs with my first, and 50 with the second. Hoping for 40 with this one haha. Anyways, I always gain a ton of weight. I used myfitnesspal with my second daughter to track everything I was eating, and I was eating 1500 cals a day, pretty healthy and I was still gaining weight like crazy. I finally chalked it up to my metabolism being shot during pregnancy. I lost the weight very easily after both girls, so I am not worried. Baby needs food or at least my girls wanted it lol.

  • You're right to try to eat a healthy well balanced diet while you're pregnant, that's a lot more important than trying to focus on the scale.  I've noticed my digestion slowing down, so my weight will go up one day and down the next once the body catches up with itself.  But overall, at 9 weeks, I'm about 5 pounds heavier and since I'm up 2 cup sizes, I'm blaming that on these stupid boobs.

Hang in there, learn to love your body.  We all get a piece of our self image from how our mom viewed herself.  I really want to be a positive roll model if this little peanut is a girl.

  • It's hard when we're told for most of our lives to lose weight, lose weight, lose weight to all of sudden put on weight! Not everyone gains the same. There are AVERAGE weight gains that can be a helpful guide, but gaining more or less than the averages does not make you unhealthy either way.

  • My first pregnancy I gained 20 pounds in the first trimester alone (I was enjoying the pregnancy excuse). I ended up gaining another 20 by the time it was over with. This pregnancy I have been teetering on gaining a pound and I am at 11wks4days. But I've also been more active, especially chasing a 10 mo around the house. Every pregnancy is different.
  • I echo what PP have said but I also want to mention that your pre pregnancy weight is really the determinant of how much weight it is healthy for you to gain. If you were over weight before you got pregnant then you need to be more careful about your weight gain. If not, it's not as important. I gained 8 pounds already but I was not over weight pre pregnancy so I'm not concerned. Last time I gained 40 pounds and I wasn't concerned at all. I didn't have gd and I lost it all and then some within 8-10 months. Don't worry OP! Talk to your doc and figure out a plan that's best for your body.

Hate to break it to you, but a scale isn't going to make you feel more comfortable in your own skin.

It's a mental game, mostly. As long as you are doing everything in your power to be healthy, you're going to gain what you gain. You will absolutely torture yourself if it becomes you vs. the scale from now until November (or beyond). Your energy is much better used taking a long walk, going to a yoga class, or experimenting with healthy meals that don't make you gag.
Haha! I never said a scale would make me feel comfortable in my own skin, but thanks for the tid-bit.

I'd definitely say it's most likely bloat, with my first I hadn't changed the way I ate at all and I couldn't wear my regular jeans after week 6. I had already gained 5 pounds by that point. Then at about week 13 it all went away and I was back back in my normal jeans and was only 2 pounds above my pre pregnancy weight! Just relax and enjoy your pregnancy!
  • Thanks @Leash14a - it's looking like a losing battle here.

  • Lmao have y'all ever been on a BMB or board before? Bumping EVERY thread from the past IS NOT helping you prove a point!
  • The last post before today was May 4. More than 7 weeks. In pregnancy, weight gain 7 weeks ago isn't relevant to weight gain currently. ^im with them. Sorry.

Okay fine I shouldn't have bumped the old threads, I did it out of frustration and I apologize. The reason why it's frustrating that this particular user posted the weight gain thread was for two reasons. The first is that she posted the sandwiches thread AND the lobsters thread. I think we all have the same opinions on those two threads. The second reason is that she participates only on the threads she started. So my opinion on this weight gain thread from her is that it's more self serving than initiating a dialogue and discussion with other users. If there needs to be a weekly weight thread I'm all for it. And it probably wouldn't have been so irksome had the thread been started by a different user.

Edited because bump ate my post. Urg.
  • Oh don't get me wrong I know and understand your frustration and let's face it half the fun of pregnancy is the hormonal tangents we get ourselves on (said no husband ever) ... But just wanted to point out your message is getting lost (literally) by bringing all the weight gain threads to the front. I'm not saying you're point isn't valid just the strategy being used isn't effective.

also keep in mind this is a huge group of women so if they as whole decide to be unorganized it's not worth it for you to waste time trying to coral them! Pointing it out in every thread is not worth your while and people will figure out who the culprits are and ignore them (I reference Oakley poodles situation) ... :)
