Baby shakes?

Does anyone else's little one get those "shakes" right before they drift off to sleep? Mine has randomly done it for about a month or so now and it freaks me out every time. I read it's a reflex, similar to us having the falling reflex as we're falling asleep. But it's so scary to watch! Looks like he's having a seizure sometimes! (He's responsive and everything if I talk to him and can snap out of it quickly, so I know it's not one)

Re: Baby shakes?

  • Scary, I've never heard anything like this. I Think I would bring it up at my doc apt.

  • With all 3 of mine we had nothing like this. Sometimes he will kinda shake with excitement for his bottle when he is really hungry and trying to put his mouth on the nipple but other than that no shaking like you described.

If it scares you and worries you I would tell the doctor and try to record it so you can show them what happens if your baby doesn't do it all the time. I would probably track when and how many times a day your baby does this too. You never know if it could be something else or its just normal for your child.

  • My DD started shaking her head back and forth (real quick and just for a second before she stops) this past week. I think it's just her figuring something new out but I also read it could be a sign of an ear infection so I'm seeing if she has other symptoms. I have never seen her shake like you describe, though.
  • I guess it's really more of a twitching rather than shaking. But it's always RIGHT before he falls asleep. It's not everyday. Just very randomly. It's always his head and arms. I called the after hours nurse who got me in touch with the doctor who said its normal. It's due to their nervous system still developing. And mentioned it is just like when we have the falling sensation like I thought. He said he'll grow out of it and said that if he was having a seizure, his eyes start to roll back into his head and he wouldn't be nursing through it. So I'm relieved.
  • @mrsaragon my LO does this! It's usually just one leg and very sporadic. Glad to hear it's normal.
  • My LO did this last week while drinking her bottle and dozing off. It was her left side. I definitely freaked for a few seconds. She never did it again, so I figured it was the whole having a new nervous system thing.
  • My nugget also shakes her head back and forth. I asked around...other moms and nurse friends. I guess it's normal. But seizure like shakes? I would ask your baby's doctor about it just to make sure it's nothing to be concerned about.

So just wanted to update that my DD has an ear infection in one ear and fluid in the other. This is likely why she's been shaking her head. Honestly she had no other indication of an ear infection as we took her to the doctor for pink eye and they checked her ears. Just an FYI if anyone else is dealing with this shaking.
