E-readers and babies

I am just seeking other opinions on the use of E-readers with your LO.
I have an E-reader, and there are a few simple books available for less than a dollar (whereas I'd have to pay upwards of $7 per hard copy) that would be appropriate for LO right now. I have to say, though, we've really tried to keep her away from screens as much as possible. We've already seen too much interest in the TV the rare times we have it on, and I wasn't sure if non-moving pictures in a book, but on a screen, would be the same. I can't decide! I don't think this is as much scientific knowledge as much as wanting to know your choices. What do you think?

Re: E-readers and babies

  • If an e reader used e ink (so isn't a backlit screen like an iPad) I don't see an issue. It's similar enough to a book that I don't think it really counts as 'screen time'.

  • I think it's a parents choice. A lot of things say "no passive screen time" because passive screen time means baby is not getting important interaction from you. Reading her a book is definitely active attention from you.

Personally, I like collecting physical books for my little guy so he can later look through them, bang them around, etc. on his own. I wouldn't want him using my kindle unsupervised, but I'd love him to play with his own books someday.
  • I would personally wait on the use of a screen for little ones this age. At this point, you could read the same few books over and over again. I would wait until around a year when you will want many different books and purchase them then.
