Pacifier for newborn???

My 3 wk old newborn will not take a pacifier... He needs it because instead of a pacifier he wants to soothe himself by sucking on me (making me thinkable is breast feeding, when he just wants to suck). Has anyone had a similar issue and found a way to get your newborn to take a pacifier? We are using 0-3 month avent pacifier. Tia!

Re: Pacifier for newborn???

  • Try a different brand?

Our DD didn't take one until she was at least 4 months old, but we liked Nuk pacifiers.
  • Loading the player...
  • Definitely try different brands. Our first only liked Nuk and this one likes the regular one we got at the hospital only.

  • Ours objg likes the tommy tippee ones it's definitely trial and error

  • Try the MAM brand
  • my baby ONLY takes MAM.
  • We use MAM and my 3 week old takes it pretty well... sometimes. I kind of hold it in place for a few seconds, she tries to spit it out a few times and then starts sucking. I also warm it (holding it in my
fist) and put some milk on it first.
  • I'll add another one to the MAM group. That's the only one DD will take.
  • I feel your pain! My little one refuses a pacifier, though we have tried several brands. He prefers the human pacifier that is mom...  :|
  • I had to start with the Nuk 0-2 month tiny pacifiers because he would gag on anything else. At 6 weeks he is now taking the 0-6 nuks.
  • Thanks ladies! I went out and bought about every kind they had! We tried the mam first, and he took it! Success! He only woke up once last night
  • And yes he only would use me as a pacifier to soothe himself to sleep too, which was confusing us both! Try a variety to see if he will take another brand/size, good luck

It sounds like a few of you guys are breastfeeding and babies are wanting to comfort suck. Have you noticed any problems with nipple confusion since successfully introducing a pacifier?
  • @leahbickham1 no nipple confusion here and this is our second.  I heard even lactation consultants no longer believe pacifiers lead to nipple confusion in most babies.

  • I don't think we're having any confusion here either. Thanks though
  • Thanks guys! Nipple confusion is just something I haven't been really clear on. Good to know its not a problem for y'all!
  • My son takes bottles and pacifiers and nipple confusion has not been an issue.
  • Gerber First Essentials.  I've only found them at Walmart.

My little girl loves to suck on me to be soothed and it gets a little frustrating - Breast feeding is demanding time wise as it is without someone just wanting to hang out on your breast ! We are only using the "soothies" but she does have the MAM brand ones and because of the grip on them apparently it helps babies keep them on. Soothies are very large and kind of push babies mouth open to stop them "clamping down". This apparently is more similar to when they are breast feeding - so I'd give them a try. My babe lovesss a binky when she is fussy and just waking up or on nights when she's finding it hard to drop off to sleep and these ones have been great for us.
  • Our nurse said nipple confusion is actually nipple preference.  Bottle nipples release milk quickly so babies don't have to work as hard hence they may prefer a bottle.  We use mam bottles and switch back and forth between breast and bottle easily.  We also use mam pacifiers to soothe her but we have Nuks to try as well.
  • My LO has used the Soothie shaped ones since day one. When she was in the NICU  they made her use those to learn how to suck, now she will only take those. We got the Nuk ortho ones at baby showers and I've tried and tried to get her to use them but she refuses every time. She really likes her froggy  WubbaNubba though.

She has used pacifiers, a slew of different bottles, and breastfeeding since birth and even with all that going on her only preference has been the shape of the pacifier.
  • We had to meet with someone from OT because of LO having suction issues as a result of being caught in my pelvic bone and she strongly recommend soothie pacifiers and dr Browns bottles for bf babies.
  • My 1st never wanted one. 2nd we never even introduced it. This is the 3rd and we are pretending they don't exist. Not terribly helpful, but some kids just don't like 'em.
