Weekly Appointment Thread (4/4-4/8)

I meant to start this around two or three weeks ago since most of were just having our first pre-natal visit. In any event, I apologize for my tardiness and plan to have this ready the Wednesday of every week :)

Hope everyone has great appointment this week!

How far along are you?

How did your appointment go overall?

Any ultrasound or doppler?

Did your doctor or midwife answer any questions or concerns you had?

  • Oh glad you started this! I'm in the waiting room now for my appt so will have to update later!

(today is when I ask a different doctor about my upcoming Florida trip...so hoping I get the green light to go!)
  • @MRSCORKER - I have my NT scan today too. Did you have to go with a full bladder? I made the appt like 3 weeks ago and I seem to remember her saying that I need to empty my bladder an hour before the appt and then drink ___ oz of water (I can't remember how many now)

  • Sorry for the extra-long post; I apparently had a lot to say!

    How far along are you?

Somewhere between 12-13 weeks. I was 10-11 at my first appt.

How did your appointment go overall?

My OB is also my GYN so I’ve had a few appointments with her over the last 2 years. I haven’t decided if I like her yet for an OB though.

My old OB moved to Texas and I’m so lost without him. He was so intuitive, so calm and caring and really made me excited and reassured all throughout my pregnancy with DD. He was open to discussion about things and never made me feel like a bother. This doctor (at a whole new practice for me) seems to have the mindset of “this is how we do things because this is how they’re done”.  It’s a weird environment for me and I’m not if I want to stay.

But overall, just the appointment itself was good.

    Any ultrasound or doppler?

We did Doppler and got to hear the heartbeat! DH was super excited because this is his first (my second).

I did the first-tri nuchal translucency screening yesterday and so we did an ultrasound for that. I made sure to tell the tech it was our first ultrasound ever so she measured Bean and said she has him/her at 5 days ahead of what they though originally, but because its less than a week, nothing would probably change. Kiddo was so active! Hopping and bouncing all over the place. She gave us a ton of photos too. It was exciting!

Did your doctor or midwife answer any questions or concerns you had?

    Again this doctor was weird.

At my initial nurse visit, she gave me a slew of tests, including a GD test that I didn’t see until I got home. I thought it was weird to have one so early so I wanted to talk to the doc about it first. Her answer as to why? “I don’t know, your BMI or something.” It was an odd answer that she didn’t elaborate on, so I’m electing to wait until the usual time to do my GD screen.

I was told to drink at least 20 oz of water a half hour before the appt. I showed up with a VERY full bladder and the tech made a comment that it was helpful. I went to the bathroom after that first scan because I thought we were done so my bladder was empty when the doc came in and did a second scan. She didn't comment on it so I guess it was still fine.

  • I have my 12 week appointment today - I'm 12w2d.  Hoping to hear the heartbeat!!

Had my NT scan last week, before my cell-free DNA test (or NIPT) - the NT scan came back well under the threshold for concern, so I'm relaxing a bit on the wait for the blood test results. Can take up to 3 weeks! (just because I'm going to be 35 when I deliver, there seems to be all this extra testing - which just means extra worries and stress!!)

My test for cystic fibrosis came back positive for a gene mutation or something.  So, now my husband needs to get tested.  If he's negative, then we're in the all clear, but if he tests positive for the same gene mutation, there's a 1 in 4 chance the baby could have CF! So, insert a whole new set of worries... Hoping they can test my husband at today's appointment. Considering his deep fear of needles, is it wrong that I've sort of "forgotten" to mention this to him and am counting on the doctor to break the news?

  • @JamieK1882 I'm glad you got the OK to go to Disney. That will be SO FUN. I don't understand why some doctors act like it's such a hassle to answer questions. Especially OBs. I get that they hear the same things over and over but THAT'S YOUR JOB. Have a little compassion.

  • We have our 12 week - ish appointment tomorrow and I just found out the doctor will only do fetal doppler, no ultrasound. We have one ultrasound from 7 weeks showing a blob. How are we supposed to announce this pregnancy when we don't even know if this kid has normal brain development? I'm reeling.

  • Hope everyone has great appointment this week!

How far along are you? 12w5d

How did your appointment go overall? It went well.  I had my NT scan today, and everything looks great. I'm measuring right along and the baby's hb was 166.  We were able to see it move around and bounce. Great pics of the entire body and at one time he/she faced the camera.  We got that pic too.  My NIPT blood work was completed today too.  I'll know in less than two weeks if it is a he or a she!!!  Hopefully all will look well and I won't have to move forward with amnio screening.  Since I'm 35 we thought it was a good idea to have the blood work done.

We had always talked about placing a cerclage after preterm two years ago.  Instead they are going to check my cervical length every two weeks, and if I start to shorten, they will place a cerclage then.  I'm a little concerned that they aren't just going to go ahead and place it now.  I'm just so worried, I don't want to lose the baby.  I've already lost one.  I'll begin progesterone shots at week 16.

Any ultrasound or doppler? Yes!  Saw the baby in all it's glory and heard their heartbeat magnificently.

Did your doctor or midwife answer any questions or concerns you had?  Yes, they were very informative and polite.  I enjoyed my experience with them today.
  • @CopperBoom86 $75!? My doctor's office told me $800 out of pocket and that insurance probably wouldn't cover any of it.

@smmatt08 - Whoa! That's crazy. She ran my insurance and it said the most I would have to pay would be $100, but the nurse said it would probably be closer to $75. They better not have made a $800 mistake!!!  :#

My doctor told me $4000 for the cell free DNA testing.  So jealous of those of you who are getting it.  It seems like a ton of people on this board are getting it -- those of you that are, it it because you are high risk/AMA and thus it's covered by insurance, your insurance covers it even though you're not high risk, or are you paying out of pocket?

As far as I know, I am not high risk. I'm 29, my bmi is 26, I'm adopted so I have no history of genetic disorders to speak of.

Y'all have got me worried now. It would be my word against the doctor's with what they quoted me. I think I'm going to call them and make sure before they actually send my blood off to have it tested.

I was offered testing too, but out of pocket.  Doctor quoted me $300, and we opted out and did the NT scan instead.  If it were $75 I'd totally do it!
  • How far along are you?
By LMP I'm 12 w 5 days, but according to the tech on Monday at my NT ultrasound, I'm measuring a week ahead, so measuring 13 w 5 days today according to his calculations.  Pretty happy to skip an entire week and go straight to 2nd tri!

How did your appointment go overall?
It went well. It was last Monday and I didn't know what to expect.  I was thinking since I was getting the ultrasound at a different place and not with my OB, then I wouldn't know if the results are good or bad until I actually see my OB (today at 430PST)... but the tech was so awesome.  He said "eyeballing it, because the baby isn't in position, you guys are looking great".  Then later on he confirmed, fluid in neck looked good, heart looked good, stomach looked good, he even showed us how blood flows from the umbilical cord to the baby.  So awesome.  He let us hear the heartbeat, and told us the sex (a boy!)

I see my OB later today and I get to find out the results of the blood test and the Ashkenazi Jewish Panel test as well.  My first hospital tour is this evening too!  So many things going on this week.

    Any ultrasound or doppler?
Ultrasound since it was the 12 week NT scan. :)

Did your doctor or midwife answer any questions or concerns you had?
I think all my questions were definitely answered. :)  SO's question was "are you 100% sure it's a boy?  no room for error?"  The tech said it was clear as day and he was 100% sure.  Ha, I guess we'll see!
  • I apologize in advance if this turns into a rant. My appt this week was a mess.

How far along are you? My appt was on Monday, I was 12w 3d

How did your appointment go overall? let's see...I had my NT scan at this appt so of course my SO wanted to be there which means we had to bring my toddler which is always a good time. I was scheduled to have genetic counseling last week and the test done at this appt. But, the day of the counseling was a disaster and I ended up canceling that appt. BEFORE I canceled it, I asked if I would still be able to have the test if I missed the counseling appt. They said yes, the counseling was optional so I just skipped that appt. When I got to my appt on Monday, they let me know that I wouldn't be having the testing because I canceled the genetic counseling appt. What the what! I asked for the lady that I spoke to that day that assured me I could still do it and she was basically just like, my bad. So now I have to go back tomorrow for the counseling and the test. Whatever. Then on to the scan. I might've had the most unfriendly u/s tech I've ever had. When they checked my weight and blood pressure, they told me to wait on giving a urine sample because I needed a full bladder for the scan. Ok. She starts the scan and then asks if I emptied my bladder. No, they told me not to. Well, they don't know and I say you need to empty it. Uh, ok. Empty my bladder, continue the scan. Also, she did half the scan transvaginal and half abdominal. I've never had a vaginal u/s this far along. Hell, they did one two weeks ago abdominally. Anyway, she didn't speak the whole time. Didn't tell me what we were looking at or anything until she finished and said everything looks good. I asked if baby was measuring ok and she said yes. That's all. Didn't tell me what it was measuring or anything. And my pictures were subpar. Thanks for the 3 pictures of its spine but there is one of the face so I'm not too pissed. My appt with my dr followed the scan. We waited about 45min for him to come in the room. If you've never had to entertain a toddler in the doctors office where you've already been for close to two hours, you're really missing out! I've been seeing this OB/GYN for nearly 12 years so I'm used to him being late all the time. The only reason I let him slide is because he never rushes me even when he's running super behind and I know that's why he's running behind to begin with because he always takes his time with everyone.

Any ultrasound or Doppler? surprisingly no Doppler at this appt. I assume the tech checked it during the scan but she sure didn't tell me what it was.

Did your doctor or midwife answer any questions you had? Yes! Another reason I love my dr. I had seen the NP my first couple of visits because my dr was booked. She was very by the book and read off every don't eat this and don't do that in the pregnancy manual. Since this is my third, I kind of side eyed some of them but still wanted to check with him. He's so laid back. He just picks out the most important, backed up with facts, precautions which aren't that many so back to my OTC prenatals, picking up my son that is well over 20lbs (gasp) and eating all the white queso cheese I can handle.  :#

  • How far along are you? 12w6d today, 12w4d at my appointment

How did your appointment go overall? Good! Everything looks correct. @kelliott09 I had about the reverse experience - they took me back and got my weight and blood pressure and I asked if I needed a full bladder and the nurse said "no! not until the anatomy scan at 20 weeks" and she asked another nurse who agreed with her. So I peed. Luckily they made us wait so long before the actual scan that I had to go again as they were walking me back. So I said "can I stop by the bathroom?" and the tech said "I actually need your bladder full for this." Well! How did two nurses not know that? At least it turned out fine.

Any ultrasound or doppler? We had our NT scan. The baby wiggled its arms. It was pretty fuzzy - I guess because I have lots of abdominal fat - but they saw the nuchal fold which looks good, we heard the heartbeat briefly (and my husband saw it but my monitor was further away and I did not). Rate is 144 which seems lower than a lot of people's but within the range and no one said anything about it being troublesome. No comment on gender, but we knew that from MaterniT21.

Did your doctor or midwife answer any questions or concerns you had? Yep. Didn't have many at this point. Poor doctor came in with the gender result envelope so excited, not realizing we'd already heard from the nurse. I'm wondering if they think we didn't want a girl since we're always so calm about it. The thing is we are THRILLED but secretive.

  • How far along are you? 10w5d

How did your appointment go overall? overall very good! It was a pretty quick and dirty appointment. It was nice to see baby again, and Doctor is happy with size and heartbeat (though didn't get a rate, but it as such a beautiful sound). We scheduled out the next two, which includes the anatomy scan! Feeling more and more real all the time.

Any ultrasound or doppler? ultrasound. I'll post a pic on the u/s thread. Sounds like we will have another quick check next month too :) she didn't see any signs of additional bleeding after my spotting episode, so likely just a fluke thing. Baby was pretty chill, so not too much wiggling. It's so cool to see how much more baby-like each u/s is!

Did your doctor or midwife answer any questions or concerns you had? yes, I am very grateful for a doctor that takes the time to listen and answer any questions. The only big one I had this round was the spotting and worry there, but seeing baby was a huge huge reassurance.

  • I Am just seeing this, but I had an appointment on Monday.

    13+2

it was good, but fast. I was a little annoyed, because they seemed rushed due to overbooking appointments. They wouldn't wait to do the heartbeat until my husband got there, but they did let me record it on my phone for him, so now I can listen whenever I want :)

Doppler- heartbeat was holding steady at 163!

i didn't have many questions this time, but she did say we should be fine to go to PA at the end of July. I also got to schedule my anatomy scan- 5/12!

How did your appointment go overall?
Good, got to hear the heartbeat for the first time! 160 bpm

    Any ultrasound or doppler?
Doppler, I has hoping for US but found out we get one at our aneuploidy screening next week!

Did your doctor or midwife answer any questions or concerns you had?
Yes, she was great. I've been stressing out about the screenings and doing everything right and got a little overwhelmed and confused, especially as the pressure to announce the pregnancy publicly next week approaches. I was really nervous about announcing before we knew the viability or if the baby even has a head. Finding out we get an US at the aneuploidy screening next week made me feel so much better, I think after that I might finally feel comfortable letting the cat out of the bag and telling our more delicate relatives.

  • How far along are you: 11 weeks

How did the appointment go overall: It went well, other than waiting awhile to see my doc. Got to hear the heartbeat finally- 169 bpm! I have to do a 24 hour urine collection though because of some proteins found in my sample so that majorly sucks.

    Ultrasound or Doppler?

just the Doppler this time, but have nt scan scheduled for the 18th.

    Did id doctor answer questions?
Yes! Asked some more about tubal ligation during my c-section and she answered all concerns, but also sad she was a little sad because she loves us and thinks we should have more, hahah. But she asked to really seriously think about it before making any decisions. I think we're leaning towards yes.

  • @simcal18 My insurance is covering the entire cell-free DNA test, most likely because I'm considered high-risk due to AMA (advanced maternal age) - I'm 34, but will be 35 when I deliver.  Apparently that's "old lady" in pregnancy these days.

HOWEVER, in the end, having this test done does have its perks!  The counseling I received with the doctor at Maternal Fetal Medicine was pretty awesome, AND I got the results in a week!  All came back negative, so SUPER PUMPED baby appears healthy!  After all the information from the doctors about extra chromosomes and risk of Trisomy this and that, I think I was waiting for the other shoe to drop, like expecting something to be wrong.  But, all is good! :)  Plus, we got to hear the heartbeat at this week's appointment - pretty cool.

We also could have found out the sex this early (I'm 12w4d)...but we're choosing not to.  Kind of killing me though knowing the nurse has it on the paper in front of her!!

Good, she said HB was about 166 bpm. She couldnt find it at 1st then she switched dopplers & heard it. I told her I listen to it about every 4 days, lol.

    Any ultrasound or doppler?
Doppler. Can't wait to see our pumpkin on the 14th @ my NT scan.

Did your doctor or midwife answer any questions or concerns you had? Yes, I liked the amount of time she spent with me & I was VERY happy to have been told that they allow you to be up & walking around when in labor, which is something I didn't get to have the luxury to do when I had my boys.

  • I'm 13w 1d.

Had NT scan this mornijg, so we heard the heartbeat and saw the little nugget.

This kid refused to get in the right position for the scan. I was there over 3 hours!!! The tech kept saying, nope go walk around for 20 minutes and hopefully he moves.

Finally we got the pics and all seemed well but I still wasn't in the state system for the bloodwork, so we wait for the final results.
