Diaper pail or trash can?

I'm wondering what you ladies think about using diaper pails, or if you will just put diapers in the regular trash? STMs, are special pails worth the cost in your opinion?

Re: Diaper pail or trash can?

  • I loved my diaper pail with DS but the smell while changing it was too much. Once he was about 7months I stopped using it. This time I think I'm going to use a small trash can next to changing table with a small bag in so it can be changed daily.
  • Wet diapers just toss in the garbage, dirty I put in their own plastic bag (newspaper delivery bags are perfect) and then toss in the trash.  Take out daily.  Even if the smell is contained, I don't want days worth of sewage sitting inside.

Diaper Genie = my best friend (STM)

Diaper Genie + Fabreeze = even better

  • My son just turned 2 and we still use his religiously. I have never taken out/changed it though, and I know he absolutely hates doing it (trash is DH's job). As much as he hates changing it though, neither of us can live without it!

  • Thanks ladies for sharing your experiences with them!
  • @HBamama2B we were actually thinking about the ubbi! Baby gear seemed to think it had poor odor control, although I imagine all pails (or cans) will stink if not changed frequently or when opened lol. The other option I kind of liked on the list was diaper champ, since it also doesn't require special refills and we could just use a trash bag.
  • We are registered for the Bubula steel diaper pail.  Seems easy to keep clean and uses regular garbage bags.  Seems a steep price to me but it has great reviews on smell containment.
  • @StayingFocused I was looking at that one too! It seemed kind of similar to the ubbi though and more expensive so I kind of crossed it off the potentional list. It think it's nice that it's steel though.
  • I'll have to check out the ubbi!
  • I have no experience with it so it might not be all that great. It was the one I was mostly considering if we didn't just go the regular trash can route though! It's still pricy but I guess diapers are going to be a pretty big part of our lives for like the next 2 years lol
  • I loved my UBBI with my son. Stopped using it around a year though. The smell really wasn't bad until he was on solids only.

We have two Diaper Genies (with the foot pedal) and use their brand refill bags. We used Target bags for a while, but for some reason after a few good batches we got some that would pull out too much with each diaper and end up being wasted. DS is 2.5 and smell containment is not a problem. For travel, on the go, and visiting people, I use the Munchkin brand baggies (glorified doggie poop bags that I'm sure are made in the same factory) to bag up the poopy diapers before tossing.

  • Thanks, ladies! The baggies are a good idea!
  • We had a diaper pail with DS (Ubbi) and it was nice in the beginning since there were so many diapers.  And I thought that (with a few of those arm and hammer discs thrown in) it contained the smell well so the room wasn't smelling like poop.  HOWEVER, when we did empty it, it was like a toxic waste site, it smelled horrible as soon as the pail was opened, and the pail itself reeked, we had to air it out outside every time we changed the bag.  Eventually we got rid of it and have a huge trash can right by our back door so we can toss dirty diapers easily, and that's working really well for us.  I think we'll continue that way this time around rather than bringing back the diaper pail.
  • Diaper genie started off great, but as many PPs have said, it eventually didn't contain the smell anymore. We put in plastic bags and take out daily as well now.

  • We were told we had to get one from other moms. 1 reason is we have a dog and dogs like dirty diapers... a friend of mine came home to dirty diapers every where. 2 we have a changing station set up down stairs and it stops the house from stinking.
  • Both. We keep a diaper genie in our room for at night, during the day I just throw it in the garage trash.
  • We have a diaper champ pail and it works great.  The best part is that you can use regular garbage bags.

  • I had one and never used it.  It grossed me out having dirty diapers in the house so I would dispose of pee diapers daily and poop went straight to the trash.
  • Does anyone have experience with the Diaper Dekor? it was really highly reviewed on Amazon, so it was on our registry and I'm pretty sure we're getting it.
  • Depends on your house/routine. In our ranch, we would just take the poop directly outside. Now that we have two levels, sometimes we use the diaper genie, sometimes we take it directly outside. My husband handles 100% of the diaper pail duty, which I recommend. Also, if you BF, it won't smell for a while (unexpected benefit) so you might be able to get away with indoor trash. But only a while. Then it smells. And it is not good.

  • I like a diaper pail for the first 9-11 months or so. Once they have just 1-2 really stinky diapers a day I switch to just bagging them and throwing them out, but they go through so many at first I like having it all contained.

  • We never used one with our first two kids. Pee diapers simply went in our regular garbage can. Poop diapers were just taken to the outside garbage right away.

  • We have the arm and hammer diaper pail. I liked it cause it twists the bag when you close the lid. I worked really well at keeping the smell in.

We get one for my shower so we shall see how it goes!  We bough the cloth reusable bags that go inside so they can be washed.
  • We use the munchkin bags and the regular trash can. Our kitchen trash can is pretty small so it's emptied daily. I have a diaper genie over a decade ago when my 15yo was born. I only used it a few times because it was such a pain.

  • We bought the Ubbi diaper pail and after our (plastic) fancy dog-poop pail began to fail us, we started using it for the dog's "business." Works like a charm so it was a good trial run! We've bought a second one for the nursery. It uses regular trash bags as well, which is nice. When it's time to empty the pail, we just bring it outside to change out the full bag for a new one. I think some people have tried to change bags indoors and found the escaping smell was too awful and lingered too much.
