Placenta previa/ bedrest?

Hi girls, I haven't posted much previously, but am curious if any of you have had or know of people who have had placenta previa diagnosed early in pregnancy and what their outcome has been. I know lots of placentas look like previas early on and a lot of them resolve, but since I am having bleeding I'm a little nervous.  I have what the ER doctor thinks is a bleeding placenta previa (I am a little over 10 wks), baby looks good and the initial bright bleeding has slowed to spotting, but I have been on strict bedrest for 5 days. I am curious if you've had it, did you have symptoms and how/when did it all resolve? If it didn't how did you deliver etc?  Thanks girls. :)

Re: Placenta previa/ bedrest?

  • I'm a little bit surprised that any doctor is even talking about previa this early because you typically can't see enough of placenta development and placement this early on. I had a complete previa with hemorrhage + preterm labor with my son so I'm high-risk with this pregnancy and we've talked quite a bit about the previa issue over the last couple of weeks. My RE, the OB and the MFM have all told me that the absolute earliest we'll be able to tell is 16w. Anyway, I was on pelvic rest from 16w on last time and was going to be on bed rest but ended up delivering because of the hemorrhage. Was it the ER Doctor suggesting previa or your actual OB?

  • And yes, you're right, most move from complete to partial to low lying or some version of that resolving before delivery.

  • I had partial placenta previa at my 20 week appointment with my last pregnancy.  They scheduled an extra ultrasound sometime around 33 or 34 weeks to check on it, and it turned out it had resolved itself at that point.  If it had not resolved itself, I would have needed a scheduled c-section.

Good luck, I hope everything goes well for you.
  • I had a partial placenta previa with my first pregnancy, but it was diagnosed much later than 10 weeks. I can't remember how far along, but definitely second trimester. I had bleeding and went on bed rest for 2 weeks and by then it had resolved itself. I ended up having a c-section delivery, but not because of the placenta. Good luck!
  • Thanks, it was the ER Doctor who said it based on the ultrasound report and after talking with an OB on call. They said its early to really call it that but that right now the placenta is laying over the cervix. They said I need to see my OB and get a more detailed ultrasound but I think they were trying to give an explanation for the bleeding. I am also on progesterone (prometrium by mouth) so I have wondered if that is maybe contributing? I basically haven't been able to get many answers bc I haven't been able to see my OB bc he's out of office this week. Thanks for the input :)

  • I was diagnosed with placenta previa with my last pregnancy at 12 weeks. I was put on restrictions, but not bestrest (and no sex). It ended up moving completely by 36 weeks. I was getting ultrasounds done a lot because of it. I didn't have any symptoms though. Good luck!

  • I didn't have it with my first, but at my 12 week ultrasound I was diagnosed with placenta previa.  The ultrasound technician told me that she was surprised that I haven't had any bleeding because of how it is positioned.  No bed rest, but I can't pick up anything heavier than 5 lbs, no running or jumping, and no sex.  I couldn't imagine being on bedrest @littleloviegirl .  Good luck with that.  I hope that everything resolves for you.  I go back in 2 weeks when I'll be 16 weeks for another ultrasound to check again.

  • My ultrasound tech believed that my spotting may have been due to a low forming placenta, but my doctor didn't say anything further. It sounds as though it's fairly common early on, and for many women will resolve itself.

I hope you are able to get some answers soon! In the meantime there is no harm in taking it easy and being cautious, particularly if you are still having some spotting.
