1st Trimester

Exercising...

Hello, what type of exercising is everyone doing or planning to? I was doing spin 2x a week & jogging 1-2x a week prior to finding out I was pregnant. Doc told me I cannot spin ( I am 5 weeks along) & that was my motivation on the weekends to exercise. Now, I feel I have a free pass not to do anything...lol I am thinking to do the treadmill & light weights...

Re: Exercising...

  • Did you doc give you a reason for not doing spin (by spin I'm assuming you mean on a stationary bike in a group class)? That seems weird, as it isn't outside bike riding, which can be bumpy and you could fall over. Stationary bikes don't present that risk, so I would think they're safe.

I would agree with treadmill and weights. That is my primary source of exercise.

  • perhapse you should discuss with your doctor what kind of exercises are okay, since he/she doesn't want you doing spin, which is pretty low risk. i personally just walked a lot.
  • What was your doctor's reason for banning spin? Mine actually recommended spin. It's low impact and you can work at your own pace.

  • I actually just left a message again. The nurse told me I shouldn't go to spinning classes. She is going to ask the doc as I had to explain it was a cycling class on stationary bike. With my 1st I became very lazy & stopped going to gym. Spinning motivate me to go to gym so bummed when she told me I couldn't
  • Maybe it's the risk of overheating and increased heart rate?
    Thank God for Raid.

  • I went to spin a lot when I was first pregnant. Now, I can't breathe if I talk on the phone for too long, so cardio is out. But yeah, there is a decent chance they don't understand what spin entails (presuming you are otherwise healthy)
  • Maybe they thought "spin class" was like an actual SPIN class..... Like this!!!

I only say say that because my dr, when he found out I'm a competitive skater myself AND a coach, asked me to back off the spins that require lots of abdominal stretching or naturally spin faster.

Yoga teacher here - especially in the first trimester it is safe to do any basic exercise class you were doing previously to getting pregnant.  I usually suggest that you just not start anything brand new that you haven't done before getting pregnant.  If you never ever went to the gym before I would instead suggest a lot of walking or prenatal yoga.  Prenatal yoga is okay to do even if you haven't done yoga before because the teacher will be trained to do everything very safely and cautiously and not let you do anything potentially dangerous.
  • I actually teach spin and mentioned it to my doctor at my first u/s (8 weeks).  She didn't seem to have a problem with it.  Last pregnancy, I continued to run, lift weights and do mostly my usual stuff but at a lower intensity.  I didn't teach spin at the time so I'm curious how long I'll last with #2!
