Joint pain - fingers and wrists!

Hi ladies!
A few weeks ago I started feeling a funky tingling sensation in my hands and then the pain started.
My finger and wrist joints are aching. It's hard to push myself off the bed and even harder to open bottles. I did some online digging and many women experience it during pregnancy as well.

Its carpal tunnel syndrome during pregnancy.
Have any of you experienced this and if so, have you any remedies you can share?

Re: Joint pain - fingers and wrists!

  • I suffer from bouts of carpal tunnel outside of pregnancy so I can only speak from that experience, but it's most commonly caused by swelling around the nerves in the area. So anything you can do to reduce any potential swelling in the area should help some - unfortunately in pregnancy that pretty much limits us to ice packs. Also, if you spend a lot of your day at a computer or typing try and see if you can get a wrist pad for your keyboard to give your wrists some support. In bad cases, the best treatment is typically immobilization with a wrist brace worn whenever you can - however just wearing them at night should be enough. This last one is usually the only thing that helps me bc it gives the area time to recover from 'overuse'.
  • What @dsmith211 said. Also, the last time I was at the chiro, I mentioned that I had been having some carpal tunnel symptoms, but that it had went away on it's own in the last couple weeks. (I think because I've been less swollen). The chiropractor said if it flares again to come in -- that there is an adjustment she can do to help that. I haven't personally tried it, so I can't vouch for whether it works... but I would certainly give it a try :)

  • This just started for me yesterday.  It hurts to flex my fingers, type, or make a fist.  I was planning on mentioning it to my doctor today.
  • I had it very badly with my first...the only thing that made it better was to deliver the baby. Then it disappeared!

Nothing worked for me and I was against taking pain meds for it, it was definitely worse in the morning. Sleeping with splints on worked a little, you can get them at any drug store.

  • I had this with my first pregnancy - fortunately I haven't experienced yet with this one - and it went away shortly after birth.  I don't have any remedies or advice but hopefully it will be short-lived for you, too!

  • I had it with my first and now again.  Fortunately mine has never really progressed and is manageable.  A mom or two in my first BMB did have to wear a wrist brace, however.  If it's prohibitive, I'd talk to your dr.

  • And yes, like most pregnancy symptoms - Poof!  Gone the day I gave birth.

  • Yes I have it pretty bad. I went to the chiropractor and since being adjusted it has improved slightly. I'm just in group of hoping it goes away at birth.
  • :( Some days its worse than others. I had people at work open my bowl of fruits.

  • This sounds horrible :( sorry for all of you having to put up with it. At least it's not too much longer now!
  • OP I feel your pain.  Mine are the same way.  I barely got my drink bottle open this morning.  It hurt like hell trying to get it open, but I was desperate and really thirsty and home alone so had no one to ask.  It gets worse at night and by morning I can't pop my knuckles and/or make a fist without pain.  I can't even cut my own meat at supper, or get a good grip on anything really.  It's starting to drive me crazy.  I had carpal tunnel prior to pregnancy, but I've never had it to this extent.  My hands and fingers don't appear swollen from the outside so I guess that is a good thing.
