unusual weight gain late in pregnancy

My weight gain has been pretty constant throughout pregnancy. Now that I'm in the third trimester, my weight gain has usually been about 2-3 pounds each time I go to my doctor's appointment (I go every two weeks). However, when I went in today (32 wk appt), I found out that I gained six pounds in two weeks!!! I never weigh myself at home because it just gives me another thing to worry about, but I have been eating and exercising exactly the same amount for the past two weeks as I have throughout, so needless to say I was pretty shocked to see that number on the scale. Even my doctor was surprised. She said she is not worried because it hasn't happened before, but I am wondering if this has happened to any of you other moms out there late in your pregnancy!

  • 3rd tri is when the baby does most of it's growing as well as mom.

My understanding is that you gain the most weight in the second tri. That being said, if your doctor wasn't worried, then you're probably fine.

As a side note: I weigh myself every day or every other day. My weight fluctuates A LOT. This morning I was up a pound from yesterday and yesterday I was up two pounds from the day before. I guarantee you that tomorrow or two days from now I'll be down 3-4 pounds. Fluid retention is real.

  • Yes this happened to me at my 34 week appointment! I had gained 8 pounds. We were all shocked but identified that I had not gained a whole lot prior to that and on that day was particularly swollen so probably had a lot of water weight. If I go in and have that type of weight gain again it might be cause for concern but for now I'm just gonna keep trying to eat balanced and get in light exercise.
  • My weight gain has averaged .5-1 pound per week my entire pregnancy, but in the last 2 weeks, I've gained 2 pounds each week... (4 pounds in 2 weeks)... I'm upset but not alarmed, I guess... I haven't been eating differently.

I have put on a lot of weight as well since this trimester but I am also swelling constantly and pretty bad so I'm sure some of its due to water weight. My doctor has not been concerned about my weight thus far.. me on the other hand, different story! I wouldn't worry, as PP's have said this is the time baby does some fast growing and developing.

  • Unless you feel physically different and suspect GD or excess swelling, I wouldn't worry about one measurement.
Personally, if I weighed six pounds more than two weeks ago, I would assume it was due to constipation!

  • I wouldn't worry either!

  • So many things can change weight from one day to the next. Sodium intake, water intake, constipation, the clothes you had on...I definitely wouldn't worry unless your doctor says to.

  • Sounds just like me! You and baby probably just had a growth spurt. If your overall weight gain is still in a normal range. I've also had a growth spurt at 34 weeks +6 lbs in 2 weeks but it's the first time. I know this is when baby puts on fat and I assume our bodies are probably stashing some away for BFing. It's a good reminder to keep up good nutrition but I'm not going to do anything different.
  • Also remember that in the last few weeks weight gain can stop and you can even lose a little weight because there's not much more room for baby to grow! So there may be light at the end of the tunnel. Ps I'm a FTM and read that...I have no experience if that actually happens but I'm hoping it's true!
