Fluoride Drops

Hey guys! So my LO just had her 6 month check up...at the end, our pediatrician mentioned flouride drops for her teeth. He said our area doesn't have enough flouride in the water. I let him send the RX but I haven't picked it up, because I'm not crazy about giving LO any unnecessary supplements. I did some research and it is suggested by the ADA but then I read some pretty nasty things about it online and that enough flouride can be found in some food sources. She doesn't have teeth yet even, and I know it helps promote healthy teeth before they come in but I'm really weirded out by it. Has anyone else been given this suggestion by their pedi? Do you give your little one the drops? We trust our pedi completely on most everything else but I dunno about this! Thanks guys :)

Re: Fluoride Drops

  • I'd be skeptical. Our water isn't treated (well water) and our dentist hasn't mentioned it, and even cautioned against our 3yo using toothpaste with fluoride. Too much causes staining on their permanent teeth.

  • Skip it. Fluoride is unness in any case. Just another bonus check from the pharm company to the docs.
  • Our pedi had recommended it for all our kiddos. DH has "good" teeth, I have "bad" teeth. Both our other sons have "bad" teeth (for example my 6 yr old has a cavity already and has not 1 but 2 teeth break thus far- admitted one was an accident, but the cusp on another just broke off) we didn't use the prescriptions for the other boys,  but as Dr handed me our this past week, I seriously though about filling it. It's a bummer our guys got crappy teeth and if there is a jutting I can do to help this lo I want to! Wondering if we should have been doing it all along....
  • My pedi just told me to use children's toothpaste on her gums and not worry about the drops
  • It was never mentioned by my pediatrician. Lo has both his bottom teeth now. But I use nursery water which has added fluoride to mix his formula.

  • I wouldn't be comfortable with it. My pedi doesn't suggest toothpaste yet. She said to just use a wash cloth
  • "Bad teeth, good teeth" are hereditary. There was no such thing as flourise drops when we were babies and I have great teeth. Also toothpaste already? Seems too young.
  • I live in Australia, and teeth "quality" varies by state as fluoride was introduced in our water at different times across the country. My state was the last to have fluoride in their water however my mum used fluoride drops in all of her kids. We all have perfect teeth, no fillings, no breaks or cavities or gum disease or anything. The dentist even asked if I had used fluoride drops as a kid because it's very uncommon to see teeth in such good condition in my state.
  • My pediatrician said nothing about fluoride drops and my DS has four teeth already. Personally I'd skip it
  • At DD 6 month appt my pediatrician gave us a prescription for a multivitamin with fluoride in it because we have well water. Otherwise it would have been a multivitamin without fluoride. I know this is standard practice. I'm suprised no one else mentioned getting a multivitamin with or without it.
