Daycare Naps

How are your LO's napping at daycare?
How long have they been in daycare so far?

We start daycare on Monday and I'm dreading how and if she'll nap there. She naps with a box fan on for white noise at home. She's also swaddled nice and tight and in a semi dark room. She usually naps anywhere from 45 mins - 2.5 hrs. At daycare, she'll be napping in a brightly lit room with 7 other babies and 2 teachers at all times. Daycare also won't swaddle past 4 months. Ugh, hello anxiety.

Re: Daycare Naps

  • DD has been in daycare for almost an entire month and she naps better there then she did for me. That wasn't difficult because naps horrible for me. They sent some photos and they Swaddle her arms down and put her in the swing and strap her legs in (I had to ok that) and then they dim the lights and/or hang a sheet over one side of the swing to make it darker. She gets 3-4 naps a day in there -- I'm so jealous. I try to mimic what they do at home but no go. I think all the stimulation tires them out?

I told them once she's settled more there I want them to try to push naps in the crib. They tried once and said it wouldn't work.

  • Yeah, ds does not nap well at daycare. This is his fourth week. He will get a couple cat naps and has made it to 45 min-1 hr a few times this week. I just make sure he gets a power nap when we get home so he isn't a wreck by 7 pm bedtime.

Has it affected night sleep at all?

  • My girl started daycare on Monday, and she took a 2 1/2 hour nap on her first day.  (I had similar worries to you, she wakes up at the slightest noise, needs dim lights etc.)  On her second day she only cat napped- 45 nap was the max.  As soon as we brought her home she had a 2 1/2 hour nap, was up for about an hour and a half playing/eating, and fell asleep fine that night (normal bed time).  I think it will be different every day, but as long as she is sleeping at all there I am happy!  Daycare has definitely been harder for me than her- but its supposed to get easier they say!
  • DS has been in daycare for 2 weeks now he naps great. He always has at least a 30 minute nap after each feeding and usually has one 2 hr nap each day. Our daycare will not swaddle or use any blankets in the crib but he does fine. His teacher said sometimes he's fussy and she will put him in the swing and then move him to the crib when he falls asleep. I was so worried about DS adjusting to daycare and napping and eating but he hasn't had any problems.

Luckily, no. We've kept his bedtime the same and he still does his one night feed. I know for my niece who had never learned to nap at daycare, they wound up moving her bedtime up so that she would get enough sleep each day.
  • My DS takes about four 20-30 minute naps at daycare every day. ONE time we got a 2 hour nap (must've been a growth spurt) - I'm not concerned at this point. He consistently gets (what I think is) good sleep at night. Sleeps from 8pm-6am and only gets up once in the middle of the night to eat. I'm sure my daycare lady would like if he slept more but I don't mind I guess.
