Anyone else miss zofran?

My son was born Feb 2015 and zofran was still prescribed when I was pregnant with him. TBH I think the studies done on it were bogus and I'm pretty bummed that I can't take it for sickness this time around when it worked miracles for me with him. Diclegis sucks. Did anyone else take zofran for previous pregnancies?

Re: Anyone else miss zofran?

  • I'm not sure why you think the studies on it were "bogus". It was known to cause birth defects including cleft pallet and heart problems. We have a family member affected.

Yup. A major class action was also just settled against the 5,000+ victims of zofran related birth defects. There is absolutely a causal connection.

  • Oh they no longer prescribe it? Not surprised. However, all it did for me was constipate me like I had never experienced constipation before.

It is definitely still prescribed (here in the US anyway) I know people who have and are taking it.

For me, I used unisom (one of the ingredients in diclegis) and thought it worked better than zofran. But everyone's different.

  • Really the only thing I remember about zofran is: I didn't poop for 2 weeks after I started it.
  • I took zofran and it saved me. My OB offered it this time again but I'm going to try diclegis. He said that the thing with zofran and birth defects is that many, many children are born with birth defects anyway and many, many women take zofran during pregnancy so it isn't just black and white. I'm not saying there isn't a relationship and don't want to start a debate, but I would say just do your own research.

  • I took Zofran and it literally saved me and my daughter's life.  I was so sick I was hospitalized over and over.  She was born with no defects and actually has a way above average IQ. This pregnancy I have no morning sickness at all,  yet.  No appetite,  but also no sickness.  I am rather disappointed to hear that if I do begin sickness I will possibly not have that option. I guess its time to research natural remedies!
  • I miss it dearly. I was sick til almost 5 months last time but it made life manageable... this time, I'm just pathetic.
  • I've heard about unisom and B6, also upping magnesium intake. Not sure which way I'll go but I'll ask my doctor for suggestions. It's been 10 years since I had a baby, so I feel like a newbie all over again.

**my children were born between 2004 and 2006, my dr's advice then was to drink a Coca Cola. I don't think it really helped but he was old school and it may have helped some women.
  • I started diclegis last night and actually think its helping a lot today! It doesn't get rid of the nausea completely, but it takes the edge off enough for me to function :)

Because it was a correlation vs causation study. Cleft palates and heart problems happened long before zofran was regularly prescribed. The sample size was small. Just because there's a class action lawsuit against something, doesn't mean anything. Court =\= science. But anyway.

This exactly. Its like saying moms who drank orange juice had kids with birth defects.

They gave it to my friend with HE after 10 weeks once most major development is complete because at that point the risk is so low it's worth it to take the zofran to save you dealing with the severe vomiting. So it's a case by case thing.

All natural remedies suck for me. Hah
  • Started Diclegis tonight... hopefully tomorrow is better!  I'll report back with my results :)
  • Update: Diclegis was created by angels. I'm a whole new person today.
  • So this is really disturbing!! I went the ER a couple weeks ago for dizziness/vertigo and they gave me Zofran. I asked before taking it if it was safe for baby and they said yes. I only took the one at the hospital and then was prescribed meclizine. Had no clue about Zofran and this pisses me off!
