Baby's small head

Took baby to her 2 month checkup and Dr said everything looked fine. There's this thing we have where you can look online at your health info and I was just now looking on there rechecking her next appt and on the info for her last appt it said congenital small head!!  No one talked about this with me. Now I'm worried!

No, unless they used the word microcephaly (and you'd know if your child was microcephalic) it just means your baby has a small head.

Olive, by contrast, has a weight in the 27th percentile, a height in the 50th percentile and a head circumference in the 97th freaking percentile. Which basically means Olive is a lollipop. And it means nothing. Kid's smart but she's no genius, I don't think. It's her physical stature genes.

Head circumference as a measure of human intelligence is, I believe, relegated to the science of eugenics. Hitler was the last person to give that any real consideration. So, yeah. It's not a sign of anything other than, hey! Kid has a small head size because genes. Olive got her huge head from me. I have a huge head too. And I've historically proven myself a bit of an imbecile.

Actually you should count yourself lucky. Right now Olive fits great into 0-3 month clothing - or would.. if we could get the dang things over her head...

Head-wise, she's in 6 months clothing already. Body wise? Still a few longer newborns that fit her.

    It's creepy.

  • Thanks! Yeah I mean developmentally my daughter is doing great and growing great. I just don't like seeing things on her chart that no one has talked to me about ya know
  • @groovylocks you definitely made me feel better. Thank you for the reply!
  • @groovylocksI hear ya! My DD isn't as extreme, but is at 60th for weight, 70th for height and 95th for head! I moved her up to 6 month clothes because all the necks were stretched out on her 3 month shirts lol my DS also has a 95th percentile head, but he's 98th for height and weight so it's so much more proportionate and I never noticed it really!

Going the group of unproportional babies. DD is getting into 9 month clothes now...at least those have feet on them. She is so freaking long it is ridiculous. The clothes are huge on her, but they fit her lengthwise.  DS is a tall and skinny two and half year old, so I am assuming DD will be the same.

ETA:  I did not address your concern.  I believe that many babies are not proportional in any way!!!  They are each their unique being.
  • I'm beginning to doubt this whole percentile thing. @groovylocksI just found out Carlos is in the 97 percentile for head circumference. (50% weight, 60% height.) I've talked to 10+ other moms about this and they all say "oh yea my kids were 95-99 percentile." I have yet to meet someone that has a baby with a "average" size head. They mostly seem to be above average. I'm thinking most babys just have big heads by 3 months... And then their bodies start catching up.

In your case, I agree that unless they say "microcephaly" she'll be okay! :)
  • Thanks everyone!!
  • DD is in the 3rd percentile for head circumference. Apparently between 3-97 is average. No one has said anything about her head being small.
  • What taysun said, my DD has a small head too. She's just small in general. Her heard is 10th percentile, 40th for height, and 3rd for weight. We were having some weight issues but overall she's very healthy and a happy baby. Her small head fits her small body, I'm also very thankful for her head being small at birth... Saved my lady bits lol
  • I have a big headed baby.  Takes after his dad ;)
  • DS is in the 99 percentile and isn't 3 months yet, no one mentioned it to me that he has a big head but I can see now haha!
It really doesn't mean anything though I wouldn't worry
  • Yeah Dr doesn't seem concerned about her head it's growing fine. It just scared me when I saw that. Thanks everyone for the replies!!
