Restless Leg Syndrome?

I'm trying to figure out if this is restless leg syndrome that I'm experiencing or something else. Is anyone else experiencing RLS/something similar to this?

Basically, what happens is that every evening, I start feeling weird. I don't know how to describe it other than I feel like I'm going to start twitching/spasming uncontrollably. Then, my legs do start just twitching/spasming at random. Sometimes my arms and shoulders too. Sometimes, I get full-body spasms. There's no tingling or itchy feeling...I don't know how to describe the feeling other than an all-over feeling that I'm about to lose control of my limbs... so weird. I will, obviously, be talking to my midwife, but I was curious if anyone else had experienced this.

Re: Restless Leg Syndrome?

  • I do have restless legs at points, but it does not spread to any other limbs. For me, it is just a strong urge to move my legs, but it's definitely not spasms or uncontrollable, although stretching/shifting them helps.  In large part, I can control it by getting sufficient exercise every day.

Based on what you're saying, I think you either have something different.  Please don't wait to call your doctor!

I also have RLS but mine is only in my legs and feet. RLS would not spread to the rest of your body. I would really seek answers from your provider and see what they think. If this is something totally new and out of the norm for you I would call. May be an easy fix but also may be something else that needs attention. Make sure you're keeping up with your water intake and vitamins if you've been taking them as well.

  • I get RLS when I'm laying down in the evening. My husband calls it "lightning legs" because my legs will just jolt every couple minutes or so while I'm trying to fall asleep.  It's a really uncomfortable sensation
  • I've struggled a lot with myclonic jerks, and this is a LOT like that...only I'm not sleeping. It doesn't happen if I'm walking around. I'll bring it up w/ my midwife, but every test I've taken this pregnancy has always come back totally fine.

Could it be Periodic Limb Movement Disorder?https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases_conditions/hic_Periodic_Limb_Movement_Disorder

My mom says my dad has this---- apparently he has bonked her with his arms in his sleep from time to time...

That happens in sleep - what I'm describing happens when I am completely awake

It sounds pretty unusual to me...especially since it happens when you're awake, and it's more than just your legs. Maybe take a video of when it happens and show that to your doctor (no disrespect for your midwife, but that's likely not something she has expertise in). I'd ask for a referral to a neurologist.
  • When I feel my RLS symptoms I very occasionally do feel similar sensations in my arms. Just the urge to move them- not twitching.
Probably worth calling your dr, but make sure your electrolytes are balanced. Magnesium seems to help me most. Just taking Rolaids after dinner really helps me.
