Wipe warmers sound lovely but are ultimately not necessary. If you want to warm up the wipe for a second stick it in between your cleavage until the temperature neutralizes.
I really enjoyed having a diaper genie with my first child (actually, we are still using it!) Diapers REALLY start to smell once your child starts eating solids. While the diaper pail mail not remain totally smell free it is WAY better than a normal garbage can.
We bought way too many muslin blankets for our first. Maybe 8? Overkill central.
Bottle warmers aren't all that necessary (especially if you're using powdered formula). Use room temperature water to mix powdered formula or hot water from an electric kettle to heat breastmilk bottles.
We used our baby bath tub.. a lot. But it is huge and annoying.
We also love our diaper genie. I agree that it is way better than any normal garbage can.
Also, our DD fought the swaddle, but it was the only way she stayed asleep. We could not get regular blankets to stay on. Velcro was the only thing that worked. We liked the SwaddleMe ones. The Halos have huge flaps that she would get over her face regularly so we had to stop using them.
each kid is different, but with my DD, she hated the Velcro swaddle things. We never had a wipe warmer (and we lived up north). We also didn't use a bottle warmer- you can just heat up a mug of water (or use a keurig if you have one) or like others have said, keep a crock pot of warm water. When we switched to formula, we just used warm water to mix with the powder. Voila.
Baby shoes are a waste. The only time I put them on DD was for Christmas Mass. By the time baby can start trying to walk, go with something like this, which are better for baby's developing feet.
Nursery sets are a waste, you don't use the quilt, bumpers aren't recommended, and the hampers aren't efficient. Go with a cute basket or an actual hamper that can hold a decent amount of stuff. Also you'll be putting stuff in the hamper/wash due to poopsplosions, etc. so I didn't like having the fabric hamper that came with the nursery set.
Our daughter hated the swing. I'm glad we didn't splurge on one of those super expensive and space-hogging ones!
We never used a traditional high chair. We used a bumbo seat and then switched to the Fisher Price booster chair (attaches to a dining room chair). Great way to save space and we're still using it with our 3.5 year old. Travels well, too!
We never used paci wipes or boogie wipes or a sterilizer.
Puffy baby jackets are a no-no for car seats. Get a car seat cover if you live somewhere cold.
DD was born with huge feet so we couldn't use most of the newborn sleepers that had attached booties. She screamed bloody murder
Unlike PPs, I liked: hooded towels (DD was born with a ton of hair), bumbo, bouncer,
ETA: the flannel receiving blankets got zero use from us because the Aden + Anais ones worked so much better. However, it turns out that toddlers love using flannel receiving blankets as super hero capes and/or to swaddle their baby dolls!
I definitely agree with @quartz02 that nursery bedding sets are a waste! I registered for cute sheets and 1 bed skirt. Bumpers are dangerous and comforters aren't recommended until after 1 year old.
my husband and I registered this weekend and we both found ourselves completely overwhelmed with the entire thing. Way too many options and how do I know what our baby will like? My MIL went with us and she kept encouraging us to register for EVERYTHING and anything. I felt bad. I wish I wasn't so clueless. We seriously spent an hour looking at car seats.
With the hooded towels, we loved to have a hooded one, but the infant and children's ones are too short! I realize that kids are small, but come on! My DD is four and is on the small end, and the children's size doesn't even cover her tush when she is walking from the bathroom to her bedroom to get dressed. We finally gave up the ones you can buy, and my mom started making us some with a hand towel and a large bath towel, and they are so much better. Tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7liyJ6Qsag
For me, all those really cute outfits are just that: really cute. But they aren't necessary. A tiny baby's outfit doesn't need 4 different parts to it. And, remember our babies will be born in July so it will be very HOT. all you need are onesies in the beginning and that's it in regards to clothes. I remember someone sent us a tiny vested suit...when on Earth would we use a vested suit on a child under 1? Total waste.
-The swing -Pack n Play (loved Rock n Play) -Diaper genie (I hate diaper smell so I took all poop dipes downstairs and outside to our big bins immediately) -my skip hop duo bag. Too narrow. I just used a tote after a few weeks. -hair bows or headbands or hats. Baby torture. -nursing cover (light blanket or scarf or nothing) -wipe warmer
