Possible Rib Pain?

Today (18 weeks tomorrow) I woke up with a weird pain in my right side by my ribs. I thought maybe it was how I laid last night...? As the day goes on I have felt that pain in the middle of my chest kind of where an underwire would be. It is NOT my bra and I am wondering if it is already my uterus expanding? I know the baby is not there and I saw rib pain can come at third trimester but I'm not there yet. Anyone else having pain in upper stomach area like this?

Re: Possible Rib Pain?

  • I was having that during my last pregnancy and they made me have an ultrasound on my gall bladder. The upper right quadrant is where my pain was. I am sure there are tons of links out there but this is just one that I read:

  • That sounds a little like how my heartburn feels sometimes, before it makes it's way up into my upper chest and throat.

  • I get rib pain all the time even when I'm not pregnant. Sometimes your stomach or intestines can swell and put pressure on your ribs. I have no idea if that's what it is for you, but that's what it is for me. I usually have indigestion and heartburn and reflux to accompany the rib pain.
  • I've been having this for a couple week (am 18 weeks now), especially when I sit for a long time. I get a weird kind of tingling sensation on my ribs where an underwire would be. My doctor said it was normal--everything expanding and moving.
  • Okay, thanks everyone!
  • Rib or diaphragm pain could be sign of preeclampsia or gestational hypertension, it's NOT necessarily normal.  A friend of mine had that and almost bled out.  She went to her dr and the hospital multiple times with the same complaint and they kept telling her it was normal.  Wellllll...not so much, they did one last test and her platelet count was horrific, ended up doing an emergency c-section and told her to say goodbye to her DH, no exaggeration.  And it was something that could have easily been monitored and controlled if they didn't blow her off with the initial complaint.  Get it checked ASAP.

  • I've been having the same rib pain.  My numbers were fine at my 20 week visit today, and the doctor said not to worry--that it's normal.  Hoping that's the case!
