Re: UO Thursday (3/17/16)

  • @MRSCORKER That's a good point, I didn't think about that. I was too busy being paranoid. But I just can't stomach anything else. I was going to cave sooner or later anyway. I'll feel less guilty about it now though!  :)

  • @annabenanna I did cave and eat some sushi rolls the other day. There was nothing raw in them, I just wasn't sure about cross-contamination during prep. But I really wanted them and nothing else sounded good. I've been really paranoid about how to sleep too! I always roll onto my back or stomach in my sleep. I'm not too worried about my stomach because it makes me nauseous and I wake up. And soon I won't be able to do it at all. But I can't stay off my back. I bought a huge pregnancy pillow that I'll start using once the nausea goes away. Right now it presses into my stomach and makes me nauseous (apparently everything does???) but it keeps me on my left side all night.

I think a lot of the safety recommendations during pregnancy are just pure fear mongering to make women believe they are ill and that they need medical intervention.
This is my frustration with pregnancy recommendations: many things are considered "off limits" or "proceed with caution" during pregnancy because they have not been proven safe.  But aside from the fact proving something safe is essentially trying to prove a negative, it's unethical to test substances on pregnant women to see if those substances harm their babies for obvious ethical reasons.  And then we tell women to stay away from those substances because the effects are "unknown," so then we can't even gather a fair amount of empirical data on those substances because we're telling pregnant women to avoid them.  So there's this whole class of substances out there that have not actually been shown to be harmful, but we're supposed to avoid them because there's no way to prove that they're not.  It's hugely frustrating.  I get it -- but it's frustrating.

Then there's stuff like listeria that actually IS a huge risk to pregnant women, but the outbreaks strike so randomly that it's nearly impossible to avoid everything that is a potential risk.  So they've just picked a few of the riskier things to put on the "avoid" list and called it good.  So now you're a monster if you dare to eat a cold ham sandwich, but if they had told pregnant women to avoid all ice cream during the Blue Bell listeria outbreak there would have been riots in the street.

I'm about to cave and eat some lunchmeat. It's the only thing that sounds good to me. I want Jimmy Johns SO BAD!!!!

It *is* very frustrating, especially because a lot of things are actually thought to be OK in moderation. Like caffeine. And alcohol later in pregnancy. (Or so I've heard. I won't be testing that one come my 3rd trimester though. Not worth it.) But they build up so much fear around it that I've been too afraid to have even ONE cup of coffee since I've been pregnant.

And then other things they just have no idea. I won't volunteer to be a test subject, but gosh I wish we could get some answers. It would probably eliminate a lot of no-nos and make this avoiding thing a lot less stressful.

This past weekend I ate Jimmy Johns (not heated up!) twice in two days because it was the ONLY thing I could even remotely think about eating. I didn't think twice about it. I was very by the book during my last pregnancy but this time around I'm much more relaxed.

It was DELICIOUS and both baby and I were fine afterwards :) I agree with PP... I think a lot of the rules are a little extreme... perhaps afraid of lawsuits, too.

  • UO: poop is poop. if I "need" something from the bathroom I grab it, if it's not time sensitive I wait. if someone has to poop while the other is showering, we go. consequences of having one bathroom. someday I may need to help DH get to the bathroom, wipe, etc. bms are a normal part of life. no need to camp out with your SO on the can but poop/farts are nothing to be ashamed of. i do wonder if the aversion to poo is because it's a yucky waste byproduct or another way of shaming people. (i know that might be pushing it a bit. my mind went to body shaming, vagina shaming, etc) my first bf actually believed that women didn't poop or fart. how stupid can you be?

  • @krzyriver , your nausea sounds awful!  I'm so sorry.  I hope you feel better soon.  I'm glad you ate that roll.  I think we just have to eat whatever we can keep down!  Also, when I think about the women in Japan.... I can't imagine them giving up raw fish for the entire pregnancy!
  • I used to have the sub people pop my subs into the toaster ovens. I read somewhere that at a certain temp it will kill the bacteria. I don't remember the temperature or  where I found that info but it gave me piece of mind  :)
Yeah, this is true. My OB told me to "heat until steaming."

  • @annabenanna That's a very good point! Lol. Yeah, I've been pretty miserable. The nausea itself isn't that bad, but it's all day long. And so many things trigger it. Eating too much. Eating too little. Eating something I didn't really want. Laying wrong. Sitting wrong. Twisting wrong. Standing up too fast. Walking too fast. Walking too much. I'm a mess.  :D:D

  • My OB said to avoid deli meat, but if it's the only thing around, microwaving it until it's steaming will kill any listeria.  So why not just say you can have deli meat if you microwave it?! I've definitely been eating my share of turkey and prosciutto, but I always heat them way up first.  They're just so covenient and yummy!

I also have one small cup of coffee each morning and don't feel bad about it at all.  I think the idea that you can't have any coffee has been disproven, but the myth had hung around and there is so much guilt that comes with being pregnant. My glow app this morning had an article that says no herbal tea is safe during pregnancy.  Which is not true at all.

  • Probably more of a confession than opinion, but I love lunch meat and eat a ton of it. For curiosity's sake, I checked the CDC's page on listeria outbreaks in recent years and lunch meat is no where on the list. Cantaloupe had a massive outbreak while I was pregnant with DD, but no website or nurse tells you to avoid fresh fruit! Just be smart about what you are eating and where you get it from.

Actual UO- I hate the word fart. Ugh just hate it. I'm ok with a lot of vulgarities, but just can't do fart. Our household says toots or "ducky"- a la Caddyshack "did somebody step on a duck?"

Lurking from Dec 2015 cause my BMB is boring, but...
My OB told me no cantaloupe. And she said I could have sushi as long as it was cooked or didn't have raw fish. They DID tell me to watch my peanut intake and my beef jerky intake, which was strange, but doable.

Yes! I wholly agree. I was gobsmacked the other day when TB recommended I avoid tap water. WTF, really?

My friend's wife is a doctor in Japan and I asked what they told women over there about sushi during pregnancy and her response was, "Not a damn thing." I  figure my physiology is pretty close to that of a Japanese woman anyways so I indulge occasionally. No guilt.

  • Since it's being discussed, this is what the UK advises regarding sushi. I found it fascinating last pregnancy to see all the contradictory advice varying by location.

TLDR: as long as the fish is frozen first, raw fish is fine.

"It's fine to eat raw or lightly cooked fish in dishes such as sushi when you're pregnant, as long as any raw wild fish used to make it has been frozen first. This is because, occasionally, wild fish contains small parasitic worms that could make you ill. Freezing kills the worms and makes raw fish safe to eat. Cooking will also kill them.

Certain farmed fish destined to be eaten raw in dishes like sushi, such as farmed salmon, no longer need to be frozen beforehand. This is because farmed fish are very unlikely to contain parasitic worms because of the rearing methods used. If you're unsure, contact theFood Standards Agency (FSA) for advice.

Lots of the sushi sold in shops is not made at the shop. This type of sushi should be fine to eat – if a shop or restaurant buys in ready-made sushi, the raw fish used to make it will have been subject to an appropriate freezing treatment. If you're in any doubt, you might want to avoid eating the kinds of sushi that contain raw fish, such as tuna.

The safest way to enjoy sushi is to choose the fully cooked or vegetarian varieties, which can include:

    • cooked seafood – for example, fully cooked eel (unagi) or shrimp (ebi)
    • vegetables – for example, cucumber (kappa) maki
    • avocado – for example, California roll
    • fully cooked egg

If a shop or restaurant makes its own sushi on the premises, it must still be frozen first before being served. If you're concerned, ask the staff.

If you make your own sushi at home, freeze the fish for at least four days before using it."

  • @annabenanna I try to sleep on my side, but inevitably every night I wake up on my back (even with a pregnancy pillow). My doc told me last pregnancy I would wake up if something were wrong and to not worry about it. Also, I thought that recommendation came a little later in pregnancy once our stomachs got bigger/heavier?

Did she explain why @aulrey92 ?? I haven't heard the peanut or beef jerky before.

I like my privacy when I poop but I do also have a 4 year old so that does not always happen.

You guys do realize that if you have a vaginal delivery that you are using the same muscles to push the baby out as you use to poop. Therefore it is quite common to poop while pushing. Farting in your sleep is the least of your worries.
