Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Perforation during D&C

Anybody else told their uterus was perforated during your D&C? I had a D&C for a missed mc on 3/1 - doc called me back in on 3/3 after getting initial pathology report and an ultrasound revealed tissue (ended up being ALL the pregnancy tissue) was left behind. At this appt she mentioned she may have perforated my uterus. She sent me to another doc for a more thorough D&C - that doc confirmed my uterus was perforated and found perforation with hysterscope during D&C - she also managed to remove all the pregnancy tissue. I'm so scared about what this perforation means for my future pregnancies and fertility. Luckily no other organs were perforated and I did not get an infection.

Re: Perforation during D&C

  • I'm sorry for your loss.  I don't have any experience with a perforated uterus, but I did find this on the American Society for Reproductive Medicine Fact Sheet:
"Either a lighted telescope or an open incision is placed in your belly to see if the organs around your uterus, such as intestines, bladder, or blood vessels, are injured. If any of these organs are injured, they must be repaired with surgery. However, if no other organs have been injured, long-term complications from a perforation are extremely rare and the uterus heals on its own"

I hope your healing goes smoothly and you're able to try again as soon as your ready!
  • @ladipale I'm sorry. Not only did you lose your baby but now you have to deal with these complications. I wish I had some advice for you. Don't be afraid to ask your doctor (or another if you want s second opinion) all of the questions that you have.

  • I didn't experience a perforation but my cervix was torn and had to be repaired. I've heard tho that the uterus heals itself and shouldn't affect future pregnancies at all. Wishing you the best.
  • Thanks ladies. Its been such an emotional process. My OB is amazing and feels really awful about the "miss" and mistake. i have a follow up with her next week and already a very very long list of questions to ask.
