Sunscreen

anyone using sunscreen on their LOs yet? Here in Texas it's already hitting the 90s and I'm not sure about sunscreen. All the ones I look at say to talk to pediatrician before use if baby is under 6 months. I plan on asked the pediatrician at our appointment later this week but in the meantime any STMs have favorite sunscreens that worked. And do you use it on a regular basis or just when you were going to be outside all day?

Re: Sunscreen

  • I'm also curious about this. It's too hot to cover my little man, but everything I read says sunscreen is for 6m and up.

  • This article is helpful. Sunscreen on infants under six months is generally not recommended and instead they should be kept in the shade, especially during high UV times.

  • I got think baby sunscreen online with the intention to use it only if absolutely necessary. Well I put babe in uv clothing and stayed in the shade under an umbrella, but he still got a bit red on his exposed areas under the umbrella, so I put the sunscreen on him. I am comfortable with this decision as I researched think baby sunscreen and felt it met our needs while being as safe as possible, but do what feels right to you!

I used California baby this past weekend. I tried to keep him covered as much as possible and just put it on the tops of his feet and any areas that would be uncovered.

  • With ds1 he was born in April so I needed sunscreen for him at a young age. Our pediatrician said it was fine but make sure to give baby a bath afterwards.

  • Our ped said can start at 4 months, but best to keep covered and shaded.

  • I prefered the ones with a physical barrier such as zink with my first, but found that baby could easily get very hot with sunscreen covering his body since it didn't allow his skin to breathe. When it was hot and sunny, I used a hat and loose clothing and stayed in the shade instead.
  • Thanks for all the replies. I'll definitely be talking to the ped about it but I think I'll hold off on buying any for now. luckily DS is pretty dark skinned so I don't think he will burn, but I still want to protect his skin for any sun damage.
