Newborn Congestion

hi ladies LO is 5 weeks and has some serious boogies. We have a humidifier in the room, saline drops and use the bulb seringe to suck them out. But it seems as tho nothing is working for him. What are you guys using what have worked for you?

Re: Newborn Congestion

  • My little guy just got over the flu and had congestion and cough doc recommended put a tiny amount (ladybug size) drop of baby Vic on his feet!

  • My first son had way more congestion issues. We would run a cool most humidifier in his room at night, also would shower with him in his bouncer for him to breathe in the steam. With my current son when he had some congestion the doctor recommended us to use saltwater drops in his nose to try and clear it out which helped a ton. Wish I knew about those with DS1.

  • The shower steam helped us clear out some boogies. LO fell right asleep as DH walked in with him.

  • I am in congestion boot camp right now. I brought baby up to our clinic because nursing was getting to be so frustrating and I was very concerned about her quality of breathing. The intake nurse at the clinic sent us to the emergency room because babies oxygen levels were so low! It was devastating for me to think about how long she had been trying to operate like that. Of course the situation being dire enough to go to the clinic and then the ER was devastating enough. After some physician evaluation the guy said, it's an allergy to something and everything but her little stuffed nose is doing okay. He showed us how to do high pressure saline flushing with a syringe, which I did several times a day,and now a few days later I do feel it's paying off, but it is a pretty harrowing thing to do to the baby. We're going to a follow up appt. today and I'm interested to see if her pediatrician has more to say about prevention or solutions. But don't try higher pressure saline washing without some instruction! Try a steamy bathroom, cool mist humidifier, air filters, sleeping on an incline, lots of average saline, and get some bulb suction skills, you don't want any of the syringe saline action. It doesn't hurt baby, but it's stressful.  If the congestion is loose, a nosefrida is awfully useful too! Keep us updated on how you guys are doing! I'm interested to know more about others experiences.
  • I'm in the same boat but I think it's because hubby brought home some virus from work. She's been so stuffy and spitting up more than usual, super gassy too, with what I think is diarrhea (how do you know with infants if it's all loose?). I called the pediatrician yesterday and they said to just monitor it for now and come in if it gets worse. Ugh every little thing scares me, she's so little. :(
  • Just got home from our pediatrician, he felt that it was a virus. Makes far more sense to me than allergies. There's nothing to really do about it but get through it and keep the doctor updated. Sorry for your little  :'( get well soon!
  • Dealing with major congestion here, but nothing actually in her nose. She just sounds horrible breathing! We've been doing a lot of the things suggested here but still nothing has  helped. Anyone else dealt with something similar and found something that helped?
  • @MichelleAG05 with my little one her breathing sounded quit bad before she had any mucus, her nose took a long time to release anything. As per my experience if it seems like it is disturbing eating and comfort I would get it checked out. I felt pretty awful for waiting so long till I did

@MichelleAG05 I had the same with my DD. She was very snorty but no boogers. Dr said it was probably from spit up and normal for babies and can last until they're 2 mo. She sounded worse than I think she felt and she has cleared up since. She's a spitter upper and the dr says it sometimes goes in their sinuses too which leads to congestion.
