Witch Hazel

I've been using the witch hazel pads (Tucks pads) on my breasts. I didn't think about it and now am worried if baby ingested it. He seems fine, but I will start wiping it off before feeding. Does anyone else use witch hazel on your breasts for breastfeeding?

Re: Witch Hazel

  • Why would u? Nursing pads are design to help absorb and wick away the moisture from leaking milk... not at all the same as a tucks pad

  • I like the ameda cooling gels if you are using the witch hazel for relief from burning.

I'm assuming for the cooling effect. @calebshabibi I would stop using them for this. You can get the cooling pads or even use frozen cabbage leaves for the same (safe) effect. Good luck!

  • Won't cabbage leaves deplete supply?  I've only heard them recommended to end a nursing relationship.  I'd definitely go with the cooling gel pads though.  You can pop em in the fridge and they feel goooooood.
  • I second the cooling gel pads.  I feel like the scent of the witch hazel would be unpleasant enough for baby, much less ingesting it.  Plus, you can reuse the gel pads!

I hope it works well for you, momma!
  • Yes, mainly for inflammation and the cooling sensation. My LC gave me some cooling pads. Thanks!
  • I hadn't heard that @smushi, my LC recommended them yesterday. However, if that's the case, cooling pads seem safer. I love the gel ones that stick on. Those things are my jam.

I've heard so much conflicting information - some love cooling gel pads, other professionals say they will stunt your milk supply !?!? :/ confusing
  • @cmerribury It looks like the leaves themselves don't cause you to dry up, but I probably assumed since I'd always heard about using cabbage leave when drying up the supply that the leaves themselves caused it.  Sounds like they're just for pain relief with engorgement - https://www.newkidscenter.com/How-Long-Does-It-Take-For-Breast-Milk-To-Dry-Up.html
  • @amyid - in between feeds you use cooling pads, which can inhibit milk letdown. Right before feeding, a warm compress can help milk flow, but warmth can increase inflammation.
