Mesh bumpers

Please direct me if there's a thread on this.  I thought I remembered one,  but nothing came up when I searched.

DD sleeps in a sleep sack and scoots around her crib at night.  Lately, she's been turning herself sideways in her crib and getting her leg caught between the rails.

I thought about getting mesh bumpers,  but my SIL says they're still risky. Does anyone have experience or an opinion on mesh bumpers? TIA!

Re: Mesh bumpers

  • I used mesh bumpers with DS. DD isn't miving around enough yet, but I plan to use them with her too. DS started waking himself up several times a night with either an arm or a leg stuck through the crib. The mesh bumpers were a little tricky to install correctly, but I believe that they are considered relatively safe when installed correctly. Good luck!

I think they can still pose a possible strangulation hazard and gives them something to climb on later. We used one with DS without incident and had planned to use it with DD. Then I got it out and decided not to bother. DD travels all over in her sleep but still hasn't really had an issue. I figure she'll be in our room for a while where we can wake up and be there if she gets a limb caught. Plus it would have to be taken out later as she becomes more mobile anyway.

ETA I think it comes down to preference. Also it doesn't guarantee they won't still get a limb stuck.

Agree with it being something to climb on later. We used our with DS once he started moving, but stopped using it once he was pulling himself up standing in the crib. It was a short window of time, but I'm glad that we used it.
  • I won't use them because they still pose a risk. And older babies do use them to climb out, my cousins son did just that and fell out of his crib.
  • I used one with DD and will probably use with DS. In addition to helping with limbs it's also really helpful in keeping pacifiers in the crib.

  • I just put one in yesterday because DD is super mobile when she's sleeping and her arms and legs were sticking out constantly.  She seems to like her crib better now that it's more enclosed. We got the breathable baby one from target...it was relatively easy to install and is very secure!
  • We used one with DD. She never tried to climb out. I haven't bothered putting it on for DS.

  • I put mine up a few days ago cause me little guy moves around a lot in his sleep.
  • I have a mesh bumper for this exact reason.  My arm can fit though a slot so a baby's easily can.  He only rarely scoots around in the crib but one morning I found his face smushed into the corner, but I can't say how long he was there.  So far so good.  Definitely gives me more peace of mind instead of worrying about an arm or leg getting caught.
