The third leap

my understanding is that leaps are based on your due date and not actual birth date because of brain development. So while my son is 12 weeks old he's not due to have the third leap occur (according to the app I downloaded The Wonder Weeks) until next week because he was born at 38 weeks.

BUT I'm wondering the accuracy of this because this week my son has been a different baby at night. He's fussing horribly at the breast which he's never done (and I'm pretty sure there's no supply issue because he's gaining and when I try expressing milk at this time it flows freely), also we've previously only had 1 wake time at night and now he's up 2-3 times a night. Sometimes from gas (which had also stopped) sometimes I don't know why but the only thing I can do to get him back to sleep is nurse. It just seems like to me something must be going on with him developmentally, then I look at my app and it tells me we're in the "sunshine" period and I'm like -_- ...this does not feel sunshiny at all haha

edited because I realize I didn't actually ask a question since its 4 in the morning and my brain isn't fully functioning...anyways, does anyone else have experience with this and notice their baby hitting leaps based on their birthdate more so than due date...or could something else be going on? Are growth spurts different than leaps?

Re: The third leap

  • I think growth spurts are different from leaps.  It sounds like one of the two is going on with your babe.  Babies don't read charts and when ready will go through a spurt or leap.  My DD is not scheduled for a growth spurt for another couple of weeks but I swear she's going through one now.  Lots of fussing followed by eating like crazy and sleeping more than usual. I even think she looks bigger.
  • Loading the player...
  • My DS is currently in the third leap and it began around the start of 11 weeks. (he was born 40+4 if that helps any) According to the app, it looks like it can be a week early or late, just depending on the baby. It's been going on about 3 days now and I'm just crossing my fingers it's almost over.  :s
  • DD was born 3 weeks early but for the most part has been in line with leaps per birth date and not due date. It's a mix of on time for birth and on time for due date for leaps and milestones here.
  • DD hit the 3rd leap on March 2nd. I know this because she wasn't acting like herself. She was withdrawn and not as chatty or smiling. She wasn't fussy on the boob, but she wanted to nurse a lot more. Then we had a week of getting up 3x a night. She also put on some weight too, but I don't know if she was really going through a growth spurt, she was just eating every 2 hours on the clock.

She he hit the leap a little early than what the app says, but the app also has a disclaimer that all babies are different. To me it seems like your LO could be in the 3rd leap and 3 months is a growth spurt time. Yay?!?!
  • I was wondering this, DS was born 2 weeks late and seems to be ahead of what his "chart" says now. I don't pay much attention to them, babies will do what they like when they like, I don't need a chart to make me worry more
  • What app or chart are you guys referencing?
  • @grkgdss00 the wonder weeks

I agree. I check the wonder weeks app about once a week to see what might be in our near future, but she's never hit a leap on the day they expect nor is it stormy for as long. But it is nice to reference if all of a sudden things are different if only for the reminder that "this too shall pass"!! :)
  • I was 41+4 and I am fairly sure we have been going through the third leap for the past 3 days now. And he is 12 weeks today. I bought the book and it is a pretty good read.
  • The Wonder Weeks has been ridiculously accurate for my kid. She was 10 days late and when I use her due date it is dead on. I thought it was a fluke the first time, but it was perfect for the second leap too. We are supposed to be starting the third today so we will see how it goes.
  • I feel your pain, when my LO was around 12 weeks, he went through a growth spurt and hit a wonder week at the same time. He was eating non stop and very fussy. For about 4 nights he woke up every 3-4 hours again. It passed for us and now we are approaching the dreaded 4 month regression.
  • Dd, too. I am the human pacifier from about 3:30 on. We get out of bed around 5am & she sleeps in the swing for a couple hours in the am (which is why the battery swings are not as great as the kind with the plug). Third leap starts today but this has been going on for a few days. God only knows.
  • Good to know I'm not the only one! We are still struggling with him waking up so much more often at night so I'm wondering maybe third leap and growth spurt back to back?
i don't know but sleeping through the night never seemed so far away
  • Ugh the waking up like every 1-2 hours (not to eat) is killing me....I hope this is the 3rd leap because before this we were steadily adding an hour or so to our long stretch of sleep every couple of days! I need long stretches of sleep back! She's also been eating not that much for the nanny and holding out for me to get home! These leaps have been pretty spot on for us...hopefully we'll all get back to "normal" soon
  • Maybe this is why my LO was up every hour last night, wanting to comfort nurse. She's usually gives me two to three hour stretches. She's 11 weeks today so possibly started a few days early
  • It's probably a coincidence (I hope not), but DD was back to sleeping in very short stretches again the last few weeks, but last night she slept 7 1/2 hours straight... I just looked and her third leap ended yesterday according to the chart.

I go by due date per the instructions, and she was born at 38 weeks.
