Re: rhogam injection

  • I've had two this pregnancy. No side effects. It hurt less than the whooping cough vaccine I got at the same time. Good luck!

  • @sapphirerose915 I just had mine on Tuesday. When she first poked me, that hurt but actually getting the shot didn't it was just a little uncomfortable. Have your nurse inject it very slowly and it won't hurt.

Is this something you're required to get? I had an apt yesterday and I am 30 wks and 3 days and they didn't do anything or even mention the injection. My next apt is 2 wks from now.
  • I thought it hurt more than the TDAP shot.  I have had two Rhogram shots in my life.  The first was when we lost our first.  The hospital gave the Rhogram shot in my arm.  No pain there.  The doctor last week gave me a rhogram shot in my butt area.  That hurt.  Not so much while it was being given, but afterwards.

It's only required if you have a negative blood type. If it hasn't been brought up then you're probably ok. :)

sapphirerose915 It doesn't really hurt per say... I had to get mine in the hip and it stung a little, then I was sore for a little bit after, but honestly it hurt less than when they do my blood draws for labs.
  • Mine was in the hip and the shot hurt but I was fine after a few minutes. Now, that Tdap shot....wow....my arm was sore for a week! I advise you to move your arm a lot after getting Tdap.
  • I feel super clueless, but what's a rhogam shot? My doctor hasn't mentioned this before.

Definition I pulled off a website but it gives the gist of it...

RhoGAM (rhod immune globulin human) is a sterilized solution made from human blood used to prevent an immune response to Rh positive blood in people with an Rh negative blood type.

If you have a negative blood type you get it at or around 28 weeks and then again at birth if your baby has a positive blood type. Basically your body can have a bad response if it comes into contact with RH positive blood if you have a negative blood type. It's also not so much an issue in the first baby you have, but if you have another child and they have a positive blood type and you have a built up immune response then it can actually attack the baby. The Rhogam essentially 'tricks' the body into thinking the antibodies are already there so your body does not produce any of it's own.

@dsmith211 it is stinging afterwards in my butt cheek.. but getting blood drawn is the WORST!!! i have the smallest veins that they can never find.. so im always getting triple poked with huge bruises afterwards!! so your right, this is nothing in comparison!!

That's my problem too. I literally have like 2 veins - one on each arm, that they can ever use bc none of the others like to cooperate or they can't even find them. That made the 4 blood draws I needed for my 3 hour glucose test really fun. They had to do 2 in one vein and 2 on the other and I'm still bruised. The last one I literally teared up a little bit and DH said watching them do it even made his arm hurt.
  • Mine stung when she started injecting but when away quick. It was nothing like a shot of rocephen! Don't know if any of y'all have ever had a rocephen shot for a uti but holy crap is it thick going in and 30 mins later I was hard core limping down the halls at work feeling like I got kicked in the butt by a horse...
  • I got one at 6 weeks for some bleeding that I was having, and just had another one at 28 weeks. The one at 6 weeks was in my leg and that hurt quite a bit, the one in my arm at 28 weeks hurt much less. I'll only be given another one after birth if the baby is Rh negative.
  • Mine hurt for about 6 hours after. I guess not hurt but was more sore than anything. I got it on my arm bc I'm having trouble with pressure on my hips already so I didn't want to make sleeping even worse. No other side effects though.
