A new pain...thoughts?

Since last evening I've been having a weird uncomfortable sensation. Basically it feels like a Braxton hicks that doesn't stop. My abdomen is tight/hard feeling and it's not extremely painful but it doesn't feel great either. I already called the doctor and they think it is just lack of fluids so I'm trying to drink more water. However I don't think I drink too little really and it isn't letting up at all. They said I could come in later but I'm trying to gauge if that's really necessary. Has anyone else felt this? This my second but I didn't really feel any Braxton hicks last time so it's new territory for me. I'm taking off and resting and pushing fluids...but I'm wondering if I'm worrying for nothing also. Baby is moving a ton.

Re: A new pain...thoughts?

  • This actually happened to me last night, except it was slightly painful. I pulled a muscle in my upper abdomen so every contraction or kick in that area hurt. I drank a ton of cold water (super cold worked, normal cold didn't do much for some reason), and I also found they only stopped when I got in bed. I was on the couch reclined with my feet up and still had them, but being on my left side in bed helped.

I rarely had braxton hicks last pregnancy so I was a little freaked out myself. If it continues I would go in to get checked out. Even if they say everything is fine you'll be reassured and know for next time. No harm in being cautious.

  • I had this a few weeks ago before my LO turned head down. It was just in a very odd position that was putting a lot of pressure and stretching on my belly. My chiropractor had me spend some time doing cat/cow stretches on all fours, as well as resting on my bed with my chest down and butt up in the air (starting on all fours.) Hopefully that makes sense. I did these for about half an hour before bed and it encouraged baby to find a new position. When I woke up the pain and tightness was gone. Not sure if you are experiencing the same thing, but might be worth a shot to try the stretches. :)

Ooh this sounds like a great idea, thank you! He is sitting transverse and has been for a while now so that could be it.
  • I second @lsilvey22 's suggestion. I've had this feeling when baby has been either transverse, or stuck in my hip and doing those stretches-- or an inversion if you can manage it (be careful, and kneel on a couch and lower your arms/upper body to the floor and hold for a few minutes, then crawl down) have helped him to change position and the tightness/soreness goes away afterwards.
  • I get severe abdomen tightness at the end of the day before bedtime.. i think its just from doing so much during the day my body needs to rest... i usually wake up feeling fine... baby is also extremely active during the night so it could also be him getting ready to start his rockette routine in there.. but who knows!! doc said abdomen tightness is totally normal unless it is causing a lot of pain

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • Mine subsided when baby shifted too. I had a couple of days of excruciating pain like I'd strained every abdominal muscle. It was horrible.
  • I get abdomen tightness at the end of a long day every day now. It helps when I lie on my side, and I just use it as my cue to lie down and relax. For me it is a signal that I am overdoing it.
  • ^^ pushing fluids, going pee regularly, laying on your left side, elevating your feet, eating, pooping regularly, and just getting off your feet will help calm these. If you are really uncomfortable go to L&D. Your doc more than likely will tell you to go in anyways if you call again. Better safe than sorry.

  • I get a feeling that might be the same, it's like your half doing a sit up and just holding that position. I try to lean back, relax, whatever but the feeling persists. The only thing that helps when that happens is laying down, then it seems to subside.
  • I had this at 28 weeks. It felt just like Braxton hicks just slightly more uncomfortable. Because I had a previous loss I decided to go in and get checked out just to make sure everything was okay. When I got there the nurses told me I was having contractions every 2 minutes and was starting to dilate and efface.. They gave me the steroid injections and medication to calm my uterus and I ended up staying in the hospital on bedrest for a week.
Like other PP's have said it could be nothing, but if it continues go get checked.
