Rocking chair a necessity?

Hello all.  :)<3
I would like to know what everyone's opinion is regarding a rocking recliner.
We have a bed and couch but I don't know if I'll be able to get off of the couch with a baby in my arms. Is a recliner worth the money?

Re: Rocking chair a necessity?

  • I think it really depends on your situation.

Rockers or gliders are definitely useful, especially for easing baby back to sleep in the middle of the night- although this could also be achieved by one of those baby rocker machines.

In my situation, LO will start out in his own room and unless I want to be carrying him up and down the stairs all night to sit on the couch, it's easier to have a place to sit in his room.

I love gliders anyway, so it's not a hard sell for me, but I'd call it more of a highly desireable item than a true necessity.

I didn't have one for months with a newborn then got one.  Glad I did.  I love it.  I had a rocking chair in the beginning someone gifted me but it was pretty bad as in uneven.  The glider has been awesome.  I still use it sometimes for my toddler.
  • We put our old recliner (that also rocks) in the nursery room.  I figure it will be so much more comfy than a regular rocking chair.  Especially if I get stuck there for long periods of time.  I can snooze in the recliner better lol.

  • I asked my mom friends if it was a necessity, and they all said it was. That said - you will be able to get by with whatever you choose to do and have!

  • I'm getting a glider because I would really like a place to sit and ease baby back to sleep in the middle of the night. I plan on breastfeeding too and I imagine there will be more than a few times LO will wake me up. I just like the idea of the convenience of having something there to relax us both when I'm tired.
Im sure whatever you choose is going to be fine (: It might just depend on if you have somewhere else to sit nearby or not.

  • I wouldn't use the word necessity per se but I really love my glider and ottoman. I really don't know what I would do without them.

  • I never had one with my first so I don't plan on spending $ for one this time. I usually just nursed him sitting with a boppy pillow wherever I was (in bed, on the couch). But he also slept in our room
  • I really wanted one, but didn't want to spend so much money! I was lucky and snagged a customer-return floor model for way cheap.

I used it enough, but not a ton like I thought I was going to.

  • Especially after having a c section a glider is a must!! It's really hard to breast feed in bed, it hurt my back.  A couch will work with a newborn, but around 3-4 months babies just like to be rocked :) I bought mine resale/garage sale for $20
  • I would give up a lot of things before I would give up a glider/rocker. I only had a really uncomfortable rocking chair with DD and I still used it ALL THE TIME. I gave it to my little brother who's wife is due next week and got a much more comfortable glider on Craigslist. Worth every dime.

  • Like PP said, I wouldn't say its a necessity, BUT I would say its important to have a place to sit down in the nursery area. I don't think it matters what you get to sit in as long as you have something. We bought a glider/ottoman combo because that is all we had room for.
  • We got two--one downstairs and one upstairs, for baby reasons of course but also just decorating our home. I'd say for the first 6 months it didn't feel like a necessity at all, but since then, I can't live without them! As DS got bigger it's nice to have for snuggle time before bed (especially with arms that are a decent height for elbow support!) and for middle of the night feedings. Prior to 6 months all of that was so frequent I just did it anywhere but now the glider is our spot. :)

  • We started out with an antique family heirloom wooden rocker. No. Don't do that. Get the glider. So comfy and supportive for nursing (get one with low armrests so nursing pillows fit easily) if you decide to breastfeed, plus it makes rocking little one to sleep in the middle of the night so much more pleasant.
  • A friend of mine had a baby ~1 year ago and didn't have room for a glider in their cramped rowhouse. She's said to me that if it had been at all possible she reeeally would have liked to have one for nursing.
  • I polled all my mommy friends on FB and got close to 50 responses with most suggesting a recliner. Most just said to get one that's not huge so your feet can touch the ground. I just got one that I'm loving! I also had the swivel added on it! So it does it all! It didn't take up much room either since it's not a full size. Plus I loved the price!

  • Anyone special order one from BRU? We just placed ours last weekend and got the generic 10-12 weeks to come in (nothing like ordering when I'm due in 9...). Just curious if that's accurate or if anyone got theirs sooner? Again, special ordered it so they are making it with the fabric swatch we wanted as the in store and online ones were not the colors we were interested in.
  • A rocking recliner if money allows. I've seen good buys at Costco. If not a glider. But something with arms that's comfortable.

We didn't special order ours but it was the regular order. Just a heads up, we were never notified it was in. It was supposed to be 1-2 weeks and on week three we went in and they were like oh yeah it's here. I mentioned that I hadn't been notified and they said sometimes they have glitches in their notification system. So just a heads up, I would check in with them as it nears the time frame to see if it's in!

We never got a call/email/whatever about our nursery furniture either...it wasn't until I called to check on the situation that they told us the stuff was in. So, yeah, if you're gonna be picking it up in-store, I'd also recommend checking in with them just in case. :P

  • You know...I asked this question and shortly after realized - we don't have too much of the extra money or even the room for it.  :( but now I want it! The only extra space we really have is the balcony  :s

  • I just ordered it! I found one for $120 and my size. Good enough to fit a small space. Perfect.  :p

You might check out consignment sales around you. I scored our glider for $45, and it was in excellent condition.
  • @araecasey thank you for the info. I actually found one not too long ago. My budget was $250 and I managed to get it for $120 with 15% off and free shipping. It was meant to be  :)

  • If you can't afford a rocker or glider, an exercise ball or birthing ball is good to bounce on with LO to get them to sleep. Obviously way cheaper too. And for nursing or bottle feeding you can just sit on the couch or wherever is comfortable.
