pain from stretching?

So lately any time I stretch my body (just the hands over head, general stretch you do after laying down lol) I have a pain in my lower abdomen. I just stretched and had a shooting pain from one side to the other, it went away pretty quickly but I'm nervous now. I don't know what it could be and i don't know if I hurt my baby or if it's an ectopic or if I have cysts again and maybe one ruptured idk. I had a miscarriage last pregnancy so anything that hurts down there is alarming to me. Just wondering if anyone has the same thing or knows what it could be.

Re: pain from stretching?

  • Lots of things can cause pelvic/low abdominal pain in early pregnancy, most of them aren't anything to worry about (although that doesn't stop us from worrying! Especially with a past loss, which I'm sorry to hear about.) Lots of annoyed nerves in that area because of all the increased blood flow and the rapidly changing uterus. Stuff gets irritated more easily, resulting in the so-called 'round ligament pain' which is pretty common, although I can't say if that's what you're experiencing. I've had some level of discomfort with every pregnancy. Best thing to do is contact your care provider and mention it so that they can decide next steps with you.

I can say you're not going to hurt the baby by stretching. There are some old wives' tales around that but they aren't true.

  • Thank you! That makes me feel a lot better. :)
  • I get the same thing. Also get it when I sneeze or cough.
  • I feel like I remember getting this pain the whole pregnancy last time.

  • Yes, stretching, sneezing, coughing, rolling over too quickly, it can all cause those kinds of pain.
