TTC After a Loss

Re-intro, 3rd loss

We found out today that our baby has no heartbeat and stopped growing a few days ago (should have been almost 11 weeks).  This is my 3rd loss and 2nd missed m/c.  It is very similar to our loss last October and I'll be having a d&c hopefully Friday.  I don't know if we'll have testing done this time, depends what the dr tells us tomorrow.  It is really hard not knowing why.  We still want to try again and probably will following my first cycle.

Re: Re-intro, 3rd loss

  • I am so so sorry! Recurrent losses are difficult. Let us know what the Dr recommends tomorrow. We had a lot of testing done after our second loss, so let me know if you want some info/or to talk. We are here for you. Please take care.

  • Thanks @klauerinaking  I would love to know more about what testing you did and what your thoughts on it were.
  • For our first loss we had testing of the fetal tissue after d&c-results inconclusive.

    For our second loss:
    -fetal karyotype/genetic testing
    -thyroid function
-hormone levels at CD3 and CD21(FHS, progesterone respectively)
-blood test to look for signs of PCOS (I think this involved in part testing levels of hormones and triglycerides)
-karyotype for DH and I- to look for translocation/mutations known to cause multiple mc.
-I was scheduled for a Saline infusion sonohysterography(SIS) or saline ultrasound uterine scan which I didn't get to do since we got the results.

Everything came back normal except for the genetic testing of the tissue: my second baby had turners syndrome (XO).

  • I am so, so sorry to hear this. Multiple losses are a special kind of cruel. I also had testing done, but the tissue tested after my second D&C did not show anything abnormal with the baby.

I was tested for antibody issues, blood clotting disorders, and protein deficiencies. Everything came back normal.

While I didn't get any answers for why, I think getting the testing done still helped me to want to try again. Seems like I just had a case of very bad luck. I wish you the best - take care of yourself. We are here for you.
  • Thanks you guys.  I feel like this is probably more bad luck since we've been able to have kids and I'm a little older now.  It will be interesting to see what the doctor says this time though.
  • I'm so sorry for your losses

  • I am so sorry for your losses. As pp have said, rpl is awful.

After my second loss I asked that genetic testing be done on the baby. The results helped me find a lot of healing. If your doctor won't run an rpl panel (mine would not), switch doctors. My new doctor ran tons of tests.

Ill be thinking of you and your family. I'm so sorry.
  • @thepax89 thank you.  I have no idea what to ask for.  That helps to know that there is a rpl panel.  I'm not really expecting answers, but any information would be helpful even if it's just ruling out some things.  It is terrifying to think about going through this again.
  • I'm sorry for your losses and hope you can get the answers you need. Wishing you a smooth procedure and short recovery.
  • Just for clarity, nobody used the term "recurrent pregnancy loss panel" during my testing. My doctor just said she would run tons of tests. 6-8 tubes worth, tests included thyroid and lupus. My thyroid came back very off.

I am so sorry for your losses. It is painful no matter the circumstances.

I am a bad patient in that I don't recall/keep a list of all of the testing I have had done. I never heard of it (them) referred to as an RPL panel, but like a PP said, I have given vials and vials and vials of blood to the labs. I have had a saline ultrasound to look for polyps, tilted uterus, and/or divided uterus. Chromosome testing, MTHFR testing, thyroid, and many others.

Most important thing is to have a caring and responsive RE/office staff that makes you feel comfortable. The last thing you need is an jerky doctor or staff. <3

  • @thepax89 gotcha, so there's no standard panel but RE's probably have a set of tests that they may run with RPL.  I'm not going to bring it up until my post-op in two weeks, so I will have some time to learn more and try to figure out what to push for.
  • Sorry for your losses.
  • So sorry for your losses and that you have gone through this multiple times. It is not fair that anyone must endure it.

I've had two losses and so far I've had blood tests for hormones (CD3 and CD21), thyroid, and antibodies and all came back fine. I also had a pelvic ultrasound to look for structural issues and that also came back normal. My next step is an appointment with a new OBGYN in April where I'll discuss what else we can test either before or after I get pregnant again.

  • So very sorry for your losses.  I also just experienced my third loss recenly and have begun testing.  Doctor ordered blood tests for lupus, thyroid, diabetes, and a few different blood clotting disorders.  All came back negative.  I had an ultrasound within a year, so didn't need to repeat that as structurally everything was normal at that time.  My next step is a hysteroscopy to check for inter uerine scaring or adhesions.  Best of luck you get some answers soon so this difficult journey.

  • I am so sorry.
  • D&C went well today although I lost a lot of blood.  They gave me cytotec and methergine to stop the bleeding, doctor said to expect strong cramping and I haven't felt any discomfort yet but the bleeding is not too heavy.  We ended up not getting fetal testing after a good discussion with the doctor (different doctor than last time).  I don't know if I'll regret not getting the fetus tested, but we are going to talk about some RPL testing at my apt in two weeks.  I feel a little woozy and sent DH to get me a good iron supplement.  Re-thinking TTC after the first cycle, I think we both need a little break.  We have some fun summer trips I'm looking forward to and maybe after that we can regroup.  I am going to stick around on this board though.  Thanks for all the support.
