Halo Sleepsack PSA & question

DD nearly suffocated in her sleepsack! I'm referring to the swaddle version of the sleepsack. I never considered this to be a potentially dangerous product as our hospital gave us two of these. The newborn size was great but DD outgrew it so I purchased the next size up which is Small. I was awakened by DD's grunts and was shocked to find the swaddle wings had ridden up and were covering her nose and mouth. I thought maybe DH hadn't swaddled her tightly enough so I made sure to redo it keeping low and super tight. Went back to bed and when I checked on her again, the wings had started riding up once again and were covering her mouth. I watched her for a moment to observe how this was happening. She was wiggling her arms and every time she did, the wings rode up slightly more. I am so glad I caught this in time! I want to make sure all you other mommies are aware of the potential danger.

I next tried swaddling with arms out but DD startles herself awake constantly. Does anyone know of any other safer sleep swaddles that come in fleece material?

Re: Halo Sleepsack PSA & question

  • DS would do this too. We have the Swaddle Me sleep sacks which have the little wings too.  He would inch himself down to the end of the swaddle and it was always coming up over his mouth. We are now swaddling with blankets to hopefully get him into the sleep sack where he can have his arms out.  That way if he does move his arms enough to get them loose, he can start getting used to sleeping with arms out.  I can't say he's ready to go cold turkey on the swaddling just yet, but we are going to try in the next couple of weeks to get him sleeping in it 2-3 days a week and phasing out blankets.

I still worry with a blanket because if he does manage to break loose, then that's a lot of potential fabric to get up and over his face as well.
  • I saw this starting to happen to DD when she was a newborn and never felt comfortable with the Halo. She's a little Houdini and breaks out of almost all swaddles so it was frustrating. The one we found that is nice and tight, but stretchy and has give and has not once ridden up is the Ollie Swaddle. That thing is my favorite baby purchase if you're looking for an alternative.

  • I just bought a zippadee zip and haven't tried it yet but you should look into it. Seems like w great swaddle alternative that helps with the startle reflex.

We just got this and right now it seems DD's startle reflex is still too strong for the zipadeezip, but I will be trying again in a couple weeks. The night we tried it she never fell asleep until she went back in the Ollie.

  • We love our zipadee zip! LO has been arms out swaddled for a long time though. I hope you find something that works.
  • We just tried a miracle blanket.  Slightly pricey but DS is 16 1/2 lbs and can't break out of it!  He slept 10 hrs with a 10 minute dream feed in the middle since moms boobs were going to explode!
  • Did you follow the correct swaddling instructions on the inside of the swaddle? The one we have is slightly different from other Swaddles. The same thing happened to me and then my husband pointed out that I wasn't using it like the instructions said to.
  • I have the, I love to dream sleep sack and love it! It a swaddles a baby's arms the way the prefer to have them
  • @redfallon I was trying to put both my LO's arms under both wings and that was what was causing the sack to ride up. Once I put one wing per arm it stopped doing that.

Or perhaps your baby is ready to move on from full swaddling. My LO rolled over from back to front the other day but still has a startle reflex so we have swaddled him one arm (non dominant) out the last two nights and it has been okay.
  • I have been swaddling with the Aden and anis blankets, she is 14lbs, and if she does manage to break out they are made of very breathable material

Not fleece, but I second the Ollie swaddle!

    SwaddleMe has similar instructions.

The how-to instructions are printed on the sack so I followed those precisely. DD doesn't roll over yet but I guess it's time to move on since she can break free. I do think the company needs to address this because it seems to be an issue for many and who wants to find out their baby can break free by finding them nearly suffocating.

Very true. I'm sorry this happened :( My daughter loved swaddling and it was the only way she'd calm down enough to nap or sleep at night. So I bought a few SwaddleMes when DS came along. And he hates it. I stopped after a couple of weeks. He hated his arms at his sides, and would only do it with his arms across his chest. Swaddling didn't calm him down - it just pissed him off so he wouldn't sleep. I started using the regular (not swaddle) Halo Sleepsacks with him very early. I used them with DD only after she started breaking out of the swaddles. She'd have one knee out of them.

  • Anyone have a Woombie? I am thinking of trying it as my lil 10 weeker is 14lbs and strong, so we will have to leave the Aden and anis blankets soon. It seems to offer some wiggle room but I'm assuming still dulls the startle reflex?

Literally buying one today to try for the same reason - he seems to be wiggling out of the Aden and Anais quickly but also seems kind of pissed off by the miracle blanket holding his arms down. He's 8 weeks and 11 lbs at his 6 week weigh in. I'm hoping it helps! FYI I bought the 0-3 and couldn't zip it closed so I'm going to try a 3-6 instead. I'll try and remember to post how the night goes. We bought an ergo cocoon second hand and it's a little big for him yet as he can get his hands up around his face (but not out) and rubs his face and wakes himself up.

I had bought the miracle blanket as well and she does the same thing

I use the woombies!!!! I've been trying to spread the word about how phenomenal it is!! We started out with blanket swaddles when she was born and those were the worst nights of my life lol because she was waking up at least every few hours and it was a nightmare getting her down for bed. Also the swaddle me's never worked because she would bust out of them. So I went online and got the woombie when she was about 5 weeks and haven't turned back since. She only wakes up once a night to eat and sleeps about 10-12hrs. I just started her on the Woombie plus so that she can't roll over. I would recommend a woombie over any other swaddle
  • @theawc42 I'm going to try it for sure, thanks!
  • @laurabwalker ok... Granted other factors may have been at play...BUT.... Babe slept a 6 hr stretch last night!!! Only the second time ever!!!! I really hope it was the woombie that did the trick and that our sleep is about to get awesome!!!

  • What kind of woombie do you have? @theawc42
