Sleeping through the night

mommy is a happy camper! My toddler is finally sleeping through the night and my 4 month old only gets up once in the middle of the night!! Up until recently the toddler would get up 2-4 times a night ever since he was born, so I am so relieved the LO loves to sleep! I am getting more sleep now than in the last two years!!

Re: Sleeping through the night

  • Congrats!! Sleep is so exciting!

My LO slept through the night one night last week. He would have slept probably 12 hours if DH hadn't gone in to check on him at 5:45 and came back out to tell me "I couldn't tell if he was breathing so I woke him up." Thanks, dear.

Sadly it it seems to have been a fluke. LO is very clearly teething now and isn't getting the sleep he needs. Yesterday every nap was a fight and he slept maybe 2 hours total in the 13 hours between waking up in the morning and bedtime that night. It's clearly catching up to him because he woke up at 6 this morning (usually he's up at 7) and I finally got him back down a little before 7:30. He's still sleeping over 2 hours later. Poor guy. (But I had decided to go back to bed and got a 1.5 hour nap and it was glorious!)

I can't wait for him to sleep better. I'm so tired. Coffee is my bff.
  • I was blessed with a good sleeper, too. It's life changing. He wakes twice (11p and 3a) to eat briefly and we fall back asleep nursing.  DS1 woke up every 2 hours no matter what day and night for 8 weeks theb he slept 8pm - 4am. We were up at 4am for the longest time. Now he sleeps until 5:15-5:30 which still sucks but better than 4am. Baby would sleep until 6 or 7 if brother didn't wake us up!
  • Thankfully, I've had a good sleeper from the start. He still sleeps pretty well but now he wakes up a lot more easily. I'm assuming this is the 4 month sleep regression I've been hearing about. On a good night, he'll sleep 8 hours without eating. On a bad night, he'll wake up twice. Sleeping through the night isn't always so great, though. On the nights he sleeps 8 hours without waking up, he always cluster feeds the next day to make up for it!
  • Omg you poor thing!  Glad to hear that's behind you now. Enjoy your sleep!!
  • Mine can't be the only one that seems ages away from sleeping through the night, right? She falls asleep around 9:00 most nights but wakes up to eat at least twice, usually around 12:00-1:00 and then around 4:00-5:00 before waking up for the day around 8:30 or so. I don't mind it because she only wakes up for about 30 minutes to eat and then goes right back to sleep, and she is really eating so I would assume she's hungry and it's not just for comfort. As far as I'm concerned it can go on as long as she needs it to but after reading about so many babies sleeping for these really long stretches it makes me wonder if that's the majority or is those of us still waking up all the time are just tired of talking about it?
  • Like I said my first child was a horrible sleeper. I would get up so much with him and I was exhausted and I was working at the time. It sucked! I think every kid is different with their sleep. I am just blessed with a sleeper the second time around and that the older one finally decided that sleep was the cool thing to do!

Mine really isn't a good sleeper either. He just had the one fluke night where he slept through. The hard part for me is that he wakes up at different times each night. He's always down around 8ish but sometimes he wakes at 11 and 3-4, sometimes it's 1 and 5, other times he wakes only once around 2... And there's combinations of those times (the worst is when he decides to wake up 3 times and does something like 11,1, and 4). Usually he's up for the day around 7... I wish it was later tbh.

Mine "wakes up" twice during the night. Air quotes because he usually won't even open his eyes. He eats with his eyes closed and only opens them for a second when I undo his diaper. The worst part for me is the fact that he's up for the day at 6-6:30 even though I don't have to be up for work till 7:30.  :(

Mine is 19 weeks today and sleeps horribly. He goes to sleep at 7 every night and wakes up between 10 and 11, then between 1 and 2, then at 4. From 4 a.m. onwards, he will only sleep in my arms. People keep telling me that I should let him cry it out, but I absolutely refuse. It's exhausting, but it's not like he will be waking up 3 times a night to eat when he's 20.  :D I remind myself of that every night.  ;)
  • @solitude1984 we live the same life and it's horrible! Someday......
  • My 17 week old is an inconsistent sleeper. Last night he slept 8-2 and 2:15-6, but the night before he was up every two hours. I just celebrate the good night sleeps. And if it's really awful I make my husband take home downstairs...

That's what we end up doing too. If I have a really bad night waking up with Isabel every 2 hours, my fiancé will take her downstairs when she gets up for the day around 8:00 and let me sleep for another hour or two. We're lucky that this works since we both do restaurant work, so 8:00 is early enough to afford me the extra time to sleep if needed.
