He won't poop :(

Baby boy is 10 weeks old.  I was exclusively breast feeding for the first month before I started supplementing.  We didn't start having pooping problems until a few weeks ago.  He went from pooping almost daily to going nearly a week without pooping.  And even so, I'd have to do the thermometer up the butt trick to get him to poop.  I know it's common for breastfed babies not to poop more than once or twice a week, but even I was EBF he was still pooping on a near daily basis.  He doesn't seem like he is in pain or acts any different, but I never thought I would miss poop so much. I've called the pediatrician and they didn't think much of it, but to see if there was a change in his diapers by his next appointment in a week.  What have you ladies done in this scenario?

Re: He won't poop :(

  • I saw some natural drops for constipation next to the gripe water in the baby section at target. Worth a try?

The gripe water made my LO fart and poop and apparently she loved the flavor as well.

    Hope poop comes soon.

  • You can try probiotics or changing formulas but it usually isn't a concern unless the stools are hard and baby is straining heavily to pass it.
  • I gave my baby an ounce of cooled down boiled water then I ate and drank things that get the bowels going (orange juice, fruit and veg etc) then fed him, then rubbed his tummy clockwise and that seemed to do the trick
  • Probiotics have helped keep DD happy. She has been less gassy and goes at least once a day. But probiotics take 2-3 days to kick in.

Exactly this, when he does go is it hard at all? Our DD didn't poo for 7ish days and just started being regular(daily) around 9weeks. Stop helping him with the thermometer. He'll go when he's ready.
  • Gerber soothe drops daily!!! I love them and my LO hasn't had a problem with gas or constipation.

Before I used the Gerber soothe drops she would get constipated all the time and I would give her a little bit of prune juice in her formula and she would go.

Hope you you get poop soon.
  • TIL that EBF babies can sometimes only poop a couple times a week. That settles the concern for which I entered this thread. I hope you can find something that helps your LO's digestion.

  • My DS is almost 3 months and still only goes once a week. He has gone as long as 11 days before and the doctors weren't concerned at all. As long as it is soft and he isn't in pain, then he should be fine.
  • Our girls poop on such an irregular basis! I thought at first it was due to us fortifying their BM after leaving the NICU. I stopped fortifying (mostly for gas issues) and they still poop on a weird schedule! Sometimes they'll poop every other day...sometimes every three days...and this last stretch was about a week. Our pediatrician has no concern since they wet a ton of diapers and are growing great. She did say we could give up to an ounce of juice a day if we were really concerned. And a glycerin suppository if they seemed like they were straining. But they always poop (the right consistency) eventually without intervention, and so will your little guy!
  • Henry poops maybe twice a week. If he isn't struggling to poop and it isn't hard, then I don't worry.
When he goes it's an explosion. Luckily I've been working when he poops lately.

My first born didn't poop for 12 days straight! The pediatrician wasn't concerned...when he finally did go it was an explosion! I got the funniest picture of him covered in poo, smirking!
  • BethP321 as PPs said, as long as the poop isn't hard, then I wouldn't worry about how often LO goes. My DD only went once a day or every other day when she was this little and hers were normal. DS goes once a day, but his are hard unless I give him juice. He's on formula for spit up and that can cause constipation. He strains and strains and you think there's going to be a ton of poo, and there's a little hard ball in his diaper :( I have to give him juice. I'm trying a different formula today to see if it helps (he needs something for massive spit ups, but that has caused the constipation).

Our DD has massive spit up issues also, we've tried everything, what are you switching up @redfallon?
  • Day 10 of no poop.  We go into the pediatrician tomorrow and will hopefully get my nerves settled.  I feel so bad for him, even if he's not acting like he's in pain.  :(

Keep us updated! Good luck today!!

  • Prune juice is our savior! One ounce in the morning and one ounce at night...everyday. My poor baby girl was having such bad poop issues...struggling, very hard poop and pain! Now between the prune juice and gerber soothe formula she still only goes every other day or once a day but there is no struggle and they are soft. Talk to your pediatrician and be demanding. At first I got the "it's normal" but i knew it was not normal and demanded to try something. Finally was offered the prune juice. Sounds gross but lo actually lovesssss them :)

He was on Enfamil AR, which worked great for spit ups, but caused constipation. I'd give him some juice in the formula bottle to help with that, but then he was spitting up with the juice diluting it, too. I started him on Similac Sensitive. He's got normal spit up and poop so far. FX this keeps up.

I woke up this morning and he finally pooped!  10 days is uncomfortable for anyone to go that long without pooping...  But we had our appointment this morning and the pediatrician said that if he doesn't poop again in the next few days to try a teaspoon or two of carol syrup mixed in his bottle.  If that still doesn't work then we would switch formulas and eventually giving him a suppository.

But he was feeling a lot better this morning and then we got our vaccines...  Took it like a champ and now he's getting some well deserved mommy cuddles.  Poor baby. I felt so helpless. :(.
  • Our DD is EFF and she hadn't gone in a week. When she tried a small nugget would come out and she screamed and cried tears from the pain. We ended up taking her into the hospital because nothing else was working and the pediatrician on call for a Saturday said keep trying prune juice, but my husband and I were so distraught with her screaming when she pushed.
She needed suppositories to help her go and then she finally had explosions in her diaper probably about 3 times for the 2 days following them
  • DS isn't very regular he can go a few days between poops,I find just a couple of ounces of warm boiled water gets things going.
  • Babies can safely go a week without pooping. If the poop isn't hard then they aren't constipated and if they don't seem uncomfortable I wouldn't force them to poop.
