Daycare bottle feedings

I'm looking for some daycare advice. My LO had a really hard time taking a bottle at first so I really pushed for them to feed her as much as she would take. Now she eats great but they keep giving her more than I'm pumping and using my freezer stash everyday. I've talked to them about how she shouldn't eat more often than every 2 hours and I've twice now had to tell them to not feed her so soon after I drop her off. Today her sheet said that they fed her 5 minutes after I dropped her off! I had a long talk with the head teacher and tried to make her understand that if she's crying after I drop her off she's probably tired and not hungry. She said she would try for an earlier nap tomorrow but really made it clear she felt she's hungry and cannot neglect that which makes me feel like a horrible mom. I'm thinking about talking to the director of the daycare if it doesn't improve. Am I the crazy one who just isn't producing enough? I send her with 16 total ounces (4 -4 ounce bottles) and they tend to give her an extra from the frozen stash. She's at daycare for 9 hours. I'm wondering if it will work itself out when I give them the go ahead to give her oatmeal but that won't be for another month.
Is 16 ounces in 9 hours alright knowing I feed her right before and right after?

Re: Daycare bottle feedings

  • I think it really depends on a lot of other factors, but you're probably right. That should be enough, depending on how many times your LO is nursing at night. Do they sleep thru the night? If so, then they may indeed be hungry. If you are feeding before and after and 1-2 good MOTN feedings, you are probably fine and they may be over feeding her. Does she spit up a lot at daycare? Another sign of overfeeding. Do they pace the bottle feeds? One idea would be to get premie bottle nipples to slow the eating so she stops when full.

We are in the opposite boat, trying to get our LO to eat as much as possible at daycare - slow weight gain.

Also, signing up to breastfeed doesn't mean you signed up to be perfect. If you do end up having to supplement once or twice a day with formula, it really wouldn't be terrible and certainly wouldn't make you a bad mom. We can only do so much.

  • I'm going through something similar. My little guy eats every four hours and daycare is feeding him every two so he's eating double what he normally does. He's not napping well and it seems like they are feeding him when he's probably just tired. I won't be able to keep up at the pace they are feeding him! I'm hoping as he continues there he will nap better and they'll get to know him better thus be able to soothe him in other ways. I feel your pain!
