3rd Trimester

Step b swab - painful, bleeding??

so I looked through the archives and didn't find anything that matched my question, sorry if I missed something.

Has anyone had the strep b swab test and it was really painful and caused bleeding??? I was not expecting it to hurt at all, but when I had it this morning it was super painful. Way worse than any pap I've had and this was just a q-tip. Then I went to pee and it felt like I was peeing glass and there was a fair amount of blood, like I was on my period. I'm waiting for my doctor to get around to calling me back, just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience. I've always heard people say it was fine, not big deal. Almost felt like he missed the target and jammed the thing up my urethra! I don't know how an OBGYN would make that mistake. :open_mouth:

  • I've has two GBS tests done, and neither hurt. I've never heard of one hurting before. Was the blood mixed in with your urine?

  • Not really. I know this is TMI lol but it might have been a little pinkish, but it was more like a line of blood down the toilet as if I were on my period
  • My personal experience was neither painful nor did I experience bleeding.

Mine was painful but I didn't experience bleeding. I doubt it's serious but definitely wait and see what doc says!.

  • Nope - this was my 4th one, and none of them have ever hurt. The swab (is supposed to) barely goes in (my doc said 1/4" into the vagina, and not at all into the rectum, just along the outside). Were you also being checked for dilation? That is always super painful for me, and had caused spotting before too.

I'm also wondering if perhaps they did a cervix check? Maybe they didn't say anything. I found the swab to painless.
  • Maybe he did check the cervix or for dilation. He didn't tell me he was checking for that, which I would believe he might do that check without saying so the way my doc has been. I was just so surprised since I've heard it's basically painless or close to that. Hopefully I get a call back tomorrow from the nurse.
  • Ouch! I haven't had this done yet but it doesn't sound like the norm. Definitely see what your nurse or doctor has to say.

  • Yeah I'm pretty sure the swab barely goes inside you. I hardly remember them doing it, it was so non-invasive.

I also suspect they did a cervical check.

  • It shouldn't hurt as it barely goes in at all.
ive seen girls bleed after getting checked though it's not super common.
  • I did my own swab and it was nothing. Maybe your doctor did something else?

    ignore. I misremembered

  • That does not sound normal at all! I got a gbs test done and it wasn't painful in the slightest! I would definitely talk to your doctor about it.
  • Are you maybe passing a kidney stone?
