One hour glucose test

So at my last dr appt I had glucose and protein in my urine. The doctor had me do a 24hr urine which was fine and a 1hr glucose that I didn't pass. I'm guessing theyll do a 3hr test next. Diabetes doesn't run in my family but now I'm kinda freaking out. Has anyone failed the one hr test but did ok on the 3hr one and not develop gestational diabetes?

My last pregnancy I failed the one hour by a few points I think, but I passed the 3 hour test easily. 

I I just had my one hour last Monday and failed with a 143. I had my three hour this morning and I'm waiting on those results. I didn't have protein or glucose in my urine either time so I have no experience there. 

Hopefully everything turns out okay. I read that glucose in the urine can be common, in pregnant and non pregnant women depending on if you ate something sugary before you gave the sample.

I didn't fail the 1 hr, but I know A TON of people who failed the 1 hr and passed the 3 hr.  Also, gestational diabetes doesn't necessarily have anything to do with having diabetes in your family, so I wouldn't use that as an indicator.  Diabetes doesn't run in my family, but my cousin, who is a healthy skinny minny, had horrible GD with all 3 of her pregnancies.

My sister-in-law failed the 1 hour test and then passed the 3 hour test. She went on to have a perfectly healthy pregnancy.

My midwife's office doesn't even do the 1 hour test, they just have everyone do the 3 hour test. My midwife explained that the 1 hour test is really only a screening, and it gives a lot of false positives. She said that she and her partners think the 1 hour test is kind of a waste of time, and they would rather just do the 3 hour test and get the actual diagnostic result.

Thanks ladies! I'm waiting for my doctors office to call and let me know when they want me to do the 3hr test. Hoping I can pass it, regardless I talked with DH today about a diet change. Less carbs and cutting down on sweets, so I hope that helps!

Failed the 1hr @164.... Three hr was excruciatingly finished a wk later no thanks to the nausea. 1st was low, with remaining 3 fine. I blame the frozen grapes I was sucking on while driving the week before. Great for nausea, but no bueno on the sugar content. I'll have to retest at 24 wks...but so far no GD.

I failed them all ( My family has such a long line of diabetes..... I had Gestational Diabetes with DD1, I was on insulin and ate a monitored diet. She came out perfect!! And since I had it with DD1, they tested me at 8 weeks and I already had it. Just taking 1 pill at night now... it gets harder to maintain your sugar levels as the pregnancy progresses (even while eating healthy & low carb). 
I was crushed when I found out I had GD with DD1 and cried thinking I was hurting my baby. It all worked out just fine and I expected it to happen this time around and have been just fine about it.

I had GD with my last pregnancy. As much of a PITA as it is, to test your sugar 4 times a day, it is the most easily treated "problem" to have during pregnancy. I was able to control mine with diet alone. I looked on the bright side, GD meant I was monitored more closely and had more ultrasounds towards the end to monitor baby's growth, so it meant I got to see DS more before he was born.

A lot of people fail the one hour but go on to pass the three hour.  If you don't pass the three hour, don't sweat it.  There are ways to manage GDM to give you and baby a healthy pregnancy.  Sometimes it's just diet management and other times they might have you take an oral medication called Metformin.  In severe cases you might have to do insulin, but I haven't seen that very often at my job (I work with pregnant women). If you do have GDM, it will be important to watch your diet (eat well, not less), try to exercise, and be diligent about checking blood sugars and/or taking any medication prescribed. 

The good news is that GDM usually goes away shortly after you deliver.  The bad news is that it makes you higher risk of developing DM later in life.  GDM is a warning to pay attention to your diet and to exercise, not just during pregnancy, but as a lifestyle habit too.

Good luck with the 3-hour test.  It stinks that you have to do it, but hopefully you will find something to help pass the time and you will pass with flying colors!

Thank you so much @HeyStVincent, I'm hoping I pass the 3hr test. I'm planning on taking it this Friday and I've been watching my diet a lot more closely since the 1hr test. I've been working out during my whole pregnancy but my diet could definitely be better. I'm hoping this was just a warning but I'll update everyone once the results come in Friday.

This happened to me with my first pregnancy. No diabetes in family, I'm not overweight and I'm pretty active.   I was shocked but I passed the 3 hr one easily.  I expect the same with this second, probably will fail first but pass 3 hr one.

Just wanted to update that I had my 3hr glucose test today and i passed by a lot! My blood sugar dropped too much even, down to 47 by the last blood draw. I definitely felt lightheaded but had no idea it got that low. I drank some juice and some milk and felt fine afterwards, I'm just glad I don't have GD and I hope that I don't have to do that again.

I failed the one hour with DS1 and DS2 and had to take the 3 hour both times, which I passed both. I also almost fainted at the end of each 3 hour, because my blood sugar gets down to the low 50s. This time they made me take the 1 hour early, no clue why as diabetes does not run in my family, but I passed! I do have to re take it at the normal 28ish week mark again though.

I'm wondering why so many of you ladies have had to take the 1 hour early? My OB doesn't make me take it till 28 weeks, even though I did have GD with my last pregnancy.

@ShanRum3 I had to take it early because I'm overweight and at more risk to develop GD. Some have to take it early if there is a family history of GD, others take it if there is glucose in their urine. There's an array of reasons why some of us have to take it early. When I was pregnant with DD I had to take it early as well and I didn't realize that not everyone takes it early until this time around. Sadly this means I have to take it twice.

I had to take it because I had glucose in my urine @ShanRum3 and then I failed the one hr but passed the 3hr one. Basically I'm going to take it as a warning and cut back on my sweets.

I just found out I failed my one hour glucose. I had a 174, which is quite high! So now I have to go next week and take the three hour glucose. I am really worried.   I took the glucose test early voluntarily because my dad has diabetes but I really didn't expect to fail.

I had GD with my first so they had me take the 1 hr at 12weeks. I failed with a 157. I was stressed having to have my gallbladder out so I didn't take the 3 hour and they have treated me for GD. It's not bad really. Helps me stay on track and eat healthy.

My dad has diabetes, but no one has mentioned the glucose test to me yet! I think my OB doesn't schedule it til later.

@cait5413its not ordered til later on, around 28 weeks but I had glucose keep showing up in my urine so that's why they had me do it early.

@cait5413 At my second appointment, I asked the doctor about the recommendation I often read to drink orange juice every day. I thought that sounded like bad advice since OJ has a lot of sugar. That led to the topic of GD and I mentioned my dad. So the doctor said it might be good to schedule the test early, so I did. I really thought it was just a precaution and that I would pass. Especially since I found out my Dad actually has adult onset type 1 which is not the type that would predispose me to GD.

@Snaps816 Yeah, my dad has Type II; or I should say, he had it. He's had a lot of health issues, and last year he had a leg amputated--after that, he is completely off diabetes drugs! He's been doing much better. My dad's twin brother also has diabetes, and his daughter is pregnant with baby #2--she did not have GD with either pregnancy and just did the test last month, I think (she's due in May), so I am pretty sure our OB (we go to the same one) just does the test later. We're about the same age (her baby #2 and my baby #1 are going to be about the same age gap as we are!), our dads have very similar genes (mirror twins), and she's heavier than I am, so her having 2 healthy pregnancies so far makes me feel pretty good about my own. I haven't had any symptoms, and they've been doing urine tests every appointment, so I am not too worried. It's just interesting to see how much procedures differ with different doctors/states.

I had GD with my first pregnancy so I had to take the early 1hr this time around. I failed by 4 points so I had to take the 3hr, but I passed this time around.

Woo-hoo! Passed my three-hour glucose test. They want me to take another one at 28 weeks, but for now I'm in the clear!

With my second pregnancy I failed the one hour but passed the 3 hr. I never developed GD and me and baby were fine. This baby, Im not getting the test at all until 28 weeks.

Before your test, eat ONLY protein and fat. Egg whites and cheese are ideal. That way, you will get a real result. If you fail the three hour after eating protein and fat, there really is something going on. A friend of mine fasted before her one hour and ate toast and eggs before her three hour and was diagnosed with GD. When monitoring her glucose throughout the rest of the pregnancy, never once did she have an elevated blood sugar, and the baby was born full term at 6lbs 6oz. I think she ended up with false positives.

My office's standard is to have all patients do it at 24 weeks.

@ebilbaoI wasn't allowed to eat before my 3hr test, I had to fast starting at midnight the night before because they draw a fasting blood glucose before you even start. With the one hr I could eat a light breakfast but I fasted with it too and somehow failed the one hr but passed the 3hr easily.
