How often do you just the front outward facing feature of your baby carrier?

Baby is on your front but facing away from you (facing the world ahead). I would think it would be nice when we go on walks or hiking or out and about to let her really see the world but curious if that feature is actually commonly used.

  • It can be very uncomfortable for both baby and wearer. The curve of babies spine throws off your center of balance and puts more pressure on your back. When they are tiny it doesn't make too much of a difference but as they grow it gets uncomfortable I found. As ds got better neck control he could look around better while facing me and once sitting up on his own I put him on my back up high so he could see over my shoulder
  • Never. You should choose a carrier where you wear the baby facing you. Not ergonomically correct to dangle facing forward.

  • You're not supposed to wear them facing out until they are much older

that being said, I have an ergo so DS faced me then he went on my back (still facing me but could see everything since he was bigger).

  • There are two carriers I know of where baby can face out and still be ergonomically correct the ergo 360 and lillebaby makes one not sure of the name. But again I find them very uncomfortable

  • Outward facing baby carriers are fine if baby is in a seated position and not dangling from their crotch. And like most things in life, moderation is key. You don't want them spending hours in one position. I used the front carry position in my K'Tan and my Becco Gemini when DS was wanting to be more social, and then I would turn him around again when he was sleepy or got overstimulated.

There is at least 1 baby carrier now where baby can face forward and still be in an ergonomically correct position :)

I stand corrected! This is new since I had my last kiddo 5 years ago.
  • With DD I had a regular Ergo and couldn't face her out but really wished I could.  Since, we've purchased an Ergo 360, so once this baby has neck control I'll let him face out often.

  • I had one carrier that faced out when DS1 was little and it was so uncomfortable. I found it much more comfortable to switch to a hip carry once they wanted to look around more, and by 2, they both only wanted to be on my back anyway.

  • I am reusing my baby ergo that I used with DD1. I researched high and low (and needed long enough straps to also fit my broad DH). Ergo was one of the best so we went with that- was nervous about the whole hip dysplasia. Ergo only allows baby facing you, when they get older you can wear it on your back so baby can see alot more that way. Honestly, I've never worn it on my back- as she got older I didn't use it as much. It was great when she was an infant though.
