Breastfeeding and pregnant

i saw in the intros that there are a few of us in this group. How old is your LO? How often are you nursing? Are you planning on trying to wean soon? Anyone else find that it's a bit more uncomfortable to nurse now?

I was so shocked to get a BFP earlier this week because I was convinced I would have to wean completely to get pregnant.

I have an 18-month-old and she nurses about 2-3 times per day and then throughout the night. She is showing absolutely no signs of wanting to wean and I'm super nervous to tell my OB because I know she is totally against nursing while PG. And for the past week, it has been pretty uncomfortable to nurse - kind of like when you're on your period. I'm wondering if this will be the new normal or if my boobs will eventually become less sensitive...

Re: Breastfeeding and pregnant

  • My LO is 20 months. I pump once a day. My goal was 2 years but we will see. It doesn't hurt anymore but a lot less and takes longer

How rude. Any chance you can switch to a different OB? There's nothing wrong with BFing while KU, extended BFing has many health benefits and many women successfully tandem feed. The La Leche League has an article on it which may be helpful - https://www.llli.org/faq/bfpregnant.html

    Hope that helps!

  • My nursling is 10 months. I work, so I pump 3-4x at work and once before bed, and the breastfeed him 1-2x in the morning before work and 2-3x in the evening and 2-3x in the MOTN. I am not planning on weaning anytime soon! I plan to nurse, even if only dry nurse, through the pregnancy and I want to hopefully tandem feed! :)

comealongponds, I would seriously consider switching OBs if she is adamant about weaning. In a healthy pregnancy there is no reason to wean. Kelly Mom has some information on this: https://kellymom.com/pregnancy/bf-preg/bfpregnancy_safety/

Also, on nipple soreness, I have a friend further along than I, and she says some days its like her nipples are dipped in shards of glass and some days she doesn't feel it at all. So, I think it could get better, than go back to being painful and so on. Right now its not too painful for me, but a week or so ago, it was really painful!

  • My youngest is 7 months. She still nurses 6 - 8 times a day. I would like her to nurse at least until a year old. She absolutely doesn't want to give up the boob yet and I don't want to rush her. My Dr is fine with me nursing while pregnant. She just said to increase my calcium intake and keep hydrated. Nursing while pregnant is a first for me.
  • My LO is 15mo and we were nursing 2x a day. Just yesterday I went down to 1x a day. I plan on stopping completely by 18mos. It's been an amazing journey, but I don't want to go any further than that. The before bed nursing session will definitely be the hardest. I'm thinking switch to bottle, then sippy? I'm excited to have my boobs back to myself again, even if it will only be for a short time.

If you're LO is 15 month, I would skip the bottle and just go sippy. Around a year is when you want to drop bottles anyway, so adding them in now might make it harder to ditch. That said, they aren't taking it to college with them, so whatever works!

  • DS is 13mo and we were in the process of slowing weaning (down to 2 feeds, one before bed and one in the middle of the night) when I got my BFP. I'm kind of feeling like I'm ready to be done BFing and he has handled weaning so well so far, so I want to keep going. BUT I was hoping his MOTN feed would be the next to go, but it seems like that is the one he is going to fight for. I don't want to rush him and don't want to make it a traumatic experience, but like I said, I'm ready to continue moving forward with the weaning process. Not sure where to go from here. I've tried giving him water instead, but that doesn't work. I might just try to cut out his bedtime feeding next, and wait and see about the MOTN one. Hmm ...

Yea I know about the no bottles after 1, he just doesn't really love sippys. I have a bunch of different kinds and he's just not thrilled.

  • @nauticallife there's no reason you can't skip the sippy and go straight to a cup or cup and straw! Saves you another transition later too!

LOL I forgot that we basically skipped sippies. The munchkin weighted straw cups are awesome because if he tips it (like a bottle) it still works. We did those and then camelbaks
