Question about foods

ped just gave us the go ahead to start rice cereal. Baby seems to be very gassy on it. Has anyone done anything besides rice cereal? She said once on rice for 2 weeks we could stay another food such as sweet potatoes etc.

what at is everyone's feeding schedule like? Do you feed by bottle or spoon and how much how many times a day. We were waiting for doc to come back in and she never did or will not return my calls about it. Needless to say we're finding a new Ped.

Thanks everyone!

Re: Question about foods

  • Why the rice first? Did he say? I am going to start with fruit or veg purée right away.
  • So when our son was born almost 4 years ago, the recommendation from the pediatrician was to hold off until 6 months to introduce solids, and to start with rice cereal or oatmeal.

This time around it is so different!  Same doctors, but different advice given new literature.

We were given the go-ahead to introduce solids at 4 months, and also to go ahead and try out any food we wanted - cereals, fruits & veggies, even pureed meat!  The only recommendation that is the same is that you introduce new foods one at a time to watch out for any allergies.

At daycare she gets oatmeal in the morning, and at night we try out small amounts of different purees.  We started with just half of those gerber stage 1 purees.  I nurse her first so she's filling up on milk.  I don't think we'll start giving her a regular "3 meals a day" of purees until around six months since at this stage breastmilk is nutritionally fulfilling.

  • no she didntt say why to start that first. Did you start with something else? @AiramJ
  • I think you can start with whatever. The cereals with formula or breastmilk seem to make an easier transition bc they already know the taste of breastmilk/formula. Just introduce each food a few days apart, like pp said
  • We started rice a few weeks before 4 months. At his checkup we told the doctor and he said as long as he handled cereal well we could move on to purées. He said do veggies and/or meats first because they are less palatable and then move to fruits because if you start with sweet they tend to not want veggies. He also said one food a week so we did peas the first week and carrots this week. Next week is green beans
  • I haven't started yet. My son will be 4 months next week, so I have to wait a little longer. I bought the Beaba food maker and read up on introducing foods. I will BF first, then try a purée after. But only once a day and only every two or three days. I am going to make carrot purée, Apple, pear purée etc. I read and heard that baby doesn't need anything but breast milk until 12 months and that solids are to get baby used to eating. However, from 6 months on baby should eat iron rich foods because there isn't enough of it in breast milk at that stage.
  • Try oatmeal instead. I started my baby on rice because that's what I thought I was supposed to do. The lady who takes care of her at daycare suggested oatmeal because she was getting constipated and oatmeal is more nutritious anyway.

I only feed her cereal a few times a week at dinner time. Will increase gradually and once she gets the hang of eating from a spoon I'll give her purees. Will start to give her solids at each meal after 6 months.
  • My baby is 5 months, how much solid food shall i give?

Not a lot. Right now they're just learning.

  • Our pediatrician said we could start at anytime now (at 4 mo checkup) and to start with a single grain cereal about a tablespoon at a feeding then go from there, do veggies next then fruits. He suggested no meats until later. Space out each new food 3-4 days apart. We haven't started yet but looking to this week, he will be 5 months on the 10th. I am planning on trying just the rice cereal mixed with breastmilk for now to see how he handles it. Our pediatrician also gave us a chart recommending when to start each food group and how much to give based on age. I plan on using that as a guide but really depends on how it all goes!

Would you mind posting a pic of the chart? I had one with DD1 and was planning on googling to find again.

  • We've done sweet potatoes mixed with breastmilk and avocado mixed with breastmilk. He eats it sometimes, but he's not really that interested yet. I plan on waiting until 6 months and starting with mashed solid foods instead.

We don't do rice cereal based on his ped's recommendation. She says there's not much nutritionally it provides so she would rather we go straight to purées instead.
  • Our pedi told us to start with fruits and veggies. Easy stuff like avocado and banana. She said start with that and if we really want introduce cereal later we can. That was our plan anyway.
  • Our pedi said to start with cereal, oatmeal or another iron fortified food. He said at this point baby gets all he needs from breastmilk except for iron.
  • @aj2988   I'd be interested in the chart as well if you could post it
  • My pedi has us starting cereal (rice or oatmeal) at 5 months and then slowly introducing fruits/veg at 6 months. He said starting earlier was linked to obesity later on? He still encouraged me to mostly breastfeed since that has all the nutrition she needs, but I could give her cereal with each meal.
  • My ped told us to start with veggies, then meats (iron), then fruits and then to mix the fruits with oatmeal cereal. (Fruits last so baby has a better chance of liking vegetables). I honestly don't think there's a right or wrong way- and every pediatrician will have their own medical recommendation
