High-Risk Pregnancy

shorten cervix 30 weeks preganat with twins.

Ok my cervix is at .73 and i'm almost 30 weeks pregnant with twins, and scared out of my mind. They are about 3lbs each and i'm getting checked every week to see if my cervix is getting any worse. I know i'm going to have them before they are due but how early is the issue. It scares me knowing that they might have to be in the hospital for a long period of time but I know its the best for them. I'm just wondering how early other peoples twins have come and if they were ok. I know with 10 weeks to go it could be worse but it's still along time from when they were suppose to get here. so anyone that can help please do

I was diagnosed with a short cervix at 30 weeks (14 mm) although Im having a singleton. I had a silicone pessary put in at 31 weeks and am currently 34 weeks pregnant. I've heard putting a pessary in reduces the risk of preterm labour before 34 weeks. This was a study with twin pregnancies:

  • hi @sarahlawlor81 and @redselig just curious, how was it determined that your cervix was shortening at 30wks? I am asking because I am a high risker who had a 29wker in 2014 and my MFM ceased cervical monitoring last week at 23wks, which I do not agree with at all. I am not a happy camper so I am just curious how you both were diagnosed. Were other symptoms occurring which made the OB or MFM check length?

@sarahlawlor81 my 29wker is 22 months as of today (19+ adjusted). He spent 76 days in the nicu and has been doing amazing since discharge. He is developmentally right on track for his actual age. He did have one complication of prematurity, but thankfully that concern has not affected him. It is a long journey but know that they are resilient warriors and they will never cease to amaze you. Join Preemie Support and Awareness on FB. That is an amazing, active and extremely helpful group. Also, make sure you deliver at a hospital with a level 3 or 4 NICU. Just be patient. Usually nicu kiddos come home on or around their due date. Prepare to become best friends with your breast pump if you plan to breast feed them (highly recommended) and def do kangaroo care as much as possible. Sing or talk to them often, it really helps their development. Lastly, pick primary nicu nurses. Once you establish which nurses you like/trust most, ask the charge nurse for them to be your primary. Primary nurses make the world of difference and ease your mind when you cannot be with your babies at 3am and wonder who is caring for them. And remember, take care of yourself. Remember to eat healthy, nourishing foods, get rest and do what you can to keep your mind and body at ease. I know, easier said than done but trust me, speaking from the experience of sitting bedside for 8-10 hours a day living on graham crackers and granola bars, was not good at all. Take care of you ;)

Feel free to ask questions. I have been a nicu parent volunteer for 18 months now so I enjoy helping others get through the journey.
  • @KutiePebbles I've been having ultrasounds once a month. After my doc stopped doing the transvaginal ones (after 3 months, if I can recall correctly), she would do a belly ultrasound and a manual cervix check. When I went in for my 7 month appointment, she felt that something wasn't quite right so she introduced the transvaginal ultrasound tool to have a better look. I'm a FTM with no pregnancy complications. I also have to add that I live in Europe.
