Let's Talk About BabyMoons!

I've decided that I'm going to stop googling the negative stuff about pregnancy, because it's making me really anxious.  I'm also getting really nervous about my ultrasound/first check-up on Monday 3/7.  Last night I broke down and sobbed on SO's shoulder about how scared I am that something would go wrong.  So we talked about focusing on the happy things.... like shopping, nursery planning and a babymoon!

I'm thinking I'd like to get away with SO for one last hurrah for Labor Day weekend. :)  Maybe head up to San Francisco and make it an extended weekend.  But then I'm also thinking about the San Juan Islands up in Washington... or the coast of Oregon.  Aaaah.  That weekend would put me at 34 weeks.  Wonder how big I'll be, and if I'll be able to kayak. :)

Anyone else planning a babymoon?  If so, where?

My 30th birthday is at the end of May and I'm pretty sure DH is planning a getaway. Does that count? I think he was originally planning a cruise. I picked up on a few hints he dropped and made sure to drop some of my own... ZIKA, HELLO?!?!

I don't know what he's planning now, but I hope it's something good! A cabin in the Smokey Mountains would be lovely! :)

I have a terrible joke. At least if you fall off the kayak your baby bump will act as a buoy to keep you afloat haha!

DH decided to plan a secret weekend getaway for my bday in April. I have no idea where we're going but he's really excited about it!
Love this joke!  SO was already making fun of how I'd be kayaking with a huge belly!  Hey, the thought of a big belly makes me feel good.  So now I have a visual of falling off the kayak with a big belly. :)
  • It'll be perfect @SonyaL9 !  You'll be past the first trimester!  They say the best time to travel is the 2nd tri!

the time and I'm a nervous wreck after a loss last year! We do have something to look forward too though, we've a holiday to Vegas booked for April, I'll be 15weeks by then.. Absolutely can't wait but I'm in the U.K so it's safe to say I'm a nervous wreck about the 11hr flight! Midwife says aslong as I keep moving, drink lots I'll be grand! Xx
  • I've convinced H to take me on a babymoon (any excuse for a vacation!) in New England in August.  We haven't decided exactly where yet but I want sea life and scenic views and history and H just wants lobster.

I know the ZIKA is terrifying isn't it?  A cruise would be so lovely and laid back though.... so would a cabin in the smokeys!

@sonyaL9 Vegas - yes! I just had a long post or two over on the symptoms thread about all the great food I had last time we were in Vegas & how my cravings are currently centered around that. The best Thai food & arepas I had in Vegas & need them again soon! I'm so excited that you get to go & I hope you get to enjoy ALL the food. It's the best thing about Vegas in my opinion! (And the people-watching!)

I found out not long after my BFP that DH had planned to surprise me on our anniversary (9/13) with a 12 day trip to Belize. Staying in a beach front villa. Ohmygoodness. We obviously had to cancel after my BFP and I was sad, but hoping to reschedule maybe in a year or two. But in the meantime, I need a beach in my life! I'm thinking maybe Alabama or Florida this summer, but not sure if either of those will happen. We have several weekend trips coming up, but nothing major planned at this time.
  • We were supposed to go on a cruise to the caribbean the week after our BFP. The cruise line agreed (with a doctors note) to give us a credit because of zika so we're talking about using it in April or May for a baby moon and going on a cruise somewhere zika-less. Bermuda hasn't had any cases so I'm keeping my FX for that. If that doesn't work, we'll probably do a New England/Canada cruise over the summer.

  • We are doing a family baby moon and will take DS to an indoor water park resort closer to baby time. It's a chance to just focus on him and give him some really good 1:1. He will be almost 6 so this is going to be a really big life change for him, but he's been begging for a sibling so I know he will be excited.

  • I was so ready and excited to plan our babymoon and of course, everywhere we had in mind is now off limits due to zika...

I'm thinking maybe Hawaii or just a weekend in San Francisco,  we'll see.

These all sound like amazing trips ladies! That's so good that the cruise line gave you a credit @MRSCORKER. I have been wondering how understanding travel companies would be about Zika threat.

We're planning a trip to the Jersey shore (back to my homeland!) in July. Nothing fancy but I am looking forward to a good Zika-free beach vacation.

Though I have no idea what I'm going to feel like at 22/23 weeks!

  • We were supposed to go to Vancouver in 2 weeks, which we planned before I got pregnant, but we cancelled our trip because I'm too scared something will happen. Also, I've been so sick and fatigued that I don't know that I'd really enjoy it. We'll probably just end up doing Catalina Island in May or June.

  • I have always been so excited for a babymoon! DH and I love to travel. We are Caribbean/beach people, but Zika scares us both, so we won't be going to the beach. Even Florida scares me. How silly is that?

Anyways, I am also trying to save up leave time at work, so we will probably go somewhere for 4-5 days over Memorial Day weekend. I was thinking maybe Lake Tahoe or Santa Fe. Those are random, but we've been wanting to visit both.

  • @Paturkey , I LOVE Thailand!  We were there last November and went to a quiet sleepy island called Koh Lanta.  I was so surprised at how many families/ young couples with babies were there.  Where did you go?  We hope to return in 2 years with the baby!  While we were there, we met a German lesbian couple who just had a baby who plan out their babymoons in a very epic way:  they find an island with great hospital facilities nearby (in the case of Koh Lanta, it was the Krabi hospital).  Then they go 2 months before they are due to give birth.  Then they have the baby there, and recuperate for another 6 months.  Oh the joys of European maternity leave.  I was so jealous when they were telling me!

@samkins Hawaii is on my list too!  I was hoping for Kauai, but it just seems like I'd enjoy it more if I could do more active stuff....

@Julia70286 I've always wanted to visit Vancouver.  Also, this airbnb in Catalina, has been on my wishlist for the longest time! https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/5325020

We're going to the Cape for a week in June with my parents but that is our normal vacation. No baby moon for us-selling our house and buying a new one put a big dent in our budget.
  • @annabenanna I've stayed there before! Well, not that exact villa, but at Hamilton Cove! Super nice! I have a couple friends that live there and grew up there and one of them is getting married at one of the campsites...in late August. I don't think my Dr is going to give me the go ahead to go camping at 36 weeks though... and I don't think I'm gonna want to! It's funny, he missed my wedding last year because his fiance was about to pop so he understands lol! Oh man... I wish I were in Catalina now.

  • With our first we planned a babymoo to Columbus, OH (exciting lol) to go to the zoo and just get out of town (it's about 3 hours from us). However two weeks before our trip I had preterm contractions and ended up on bed rest. Even when the bed rest was lifted, DH was too nervous. Although we never took a formal "babymoon," our vacation that year was 2 weeks in Hawaii (when I was about 16 weeks) which was awesome!

This time around were finishing our basement so not really planning a trip, but I'm sure we'll do some weekend getaways over the summer.
  • Some advice from a BTDT mom who has travelled extensively in pregnancy:
-Your second trimester is an amazing time for a baby moon.  Most women feel great then, and you have far fewer restrictions and comfort issues.
-Many cruise lines won't let you embark if you are 24 weeks or further. Check with the cruise line before you book.
-Some airlines require a doctor's note to fly in the last month of your pregnancy. They usually operate on the honor system, but be prepared if you're flying in your third trimester.
-Long car trips can be miserable in your third tri, or they can be fine.  Worst case, you're stopping every hour to pee, can't sit for any length of time because of hemorrhoids, and have major back pain.  There's just no way to know now how you'll feel then.
-Travel by train can be a great option in your third tri.  You have easy access to a bathroom, more room than a plane, and generally fewer hassles.
-Some doctors may advise that you not travel too far in your last month, depending on how your pregnancy progresses.  I've also heard some insurance companies may restrict coverage if you travel during your last month and deliver at an out of network hospital, but hopefully those are rare restrictions.

These are awesome travel tips @FemShep!  We are actually going to Greece in May/June, so I'll be in my 2nd trimester.  This was planned way before the pregnancy though.... and I'm just glad it worked out to where I'll be feeling better (and not pukey or nauseated).

Also, I didn't know that about airlines.  This is good to know.  We want to fly to San Francisco (an hour away from where we are, San Diego) in September.... so I should check with Southwest what their policy is.

We're definitely doing some trips before we need to alter our plans to a tad bit more family friendly vacationing.  I hate the term babymoon though.

We're hitting up Colorado for a hiking adventure (we're avid hikers) right before 3rd tri starts.  It's going to be amazing!

But... H couldn't wait.  He decided we needed an escape from PGAL stress so we're heading into the Black Hills  Friday for a long weekend of hiking to keep our minds off of stressing over each day passing.

I want to stay in the country and away from the Zika and Siesta Key Beach is the #1 beach in the US, it's on the gulf coast so the waters are calm and the sand is white/soft.... it's going to be perfect :-)
  • At the end of March, we are flying into Vegas and road tripping thru Arizona, Utah, and California. We are planning to hike a bunch of National Parks. I'm so excited! I'm sure we will
plan something over the summer, as a quick getaway also.

  • @bnsmith85 We went to Siesta Key for part of our honeymoon and I loved it, you're spot on about the sand, it's fabulous.

We're planning on going to Seattle in the 2nd trimester. The trip was planned since before the pregnancy, there's an event we want to attend and neither of us have been to the Pacific NW. When we first got pregnant and started looking at family leave policies at our work and using vacation days his instinct was to cancel the trip and I'm like hell no, one last chance for us to travel without baby, let's take it!

  • We're headed to the Bahamas in June for Track and Field event. DH is from there hence the username... I don't really count it as a baby moon because we were going one way or the other. But I'll take what I can get! I am considering a baby moon for my DS. He's ten has been an only child for so long, I want to give him a last hurrah. Has anyone done something like this?

ps... Zika is not in the Bahamas in case you're wondering though sadly I had to give up my Rio for the Olympics plan... The family is going without me
  • Last year I won a silent auction with a 3 night stay at a quaint B&B with a pontoon rental on Torch Lake (MI). It is already paid for so it will be such a relief to have some prepaid R&R before baby comes.

  • Noooo! We are supposed to cruise to New England/Canada in August for our 5 year anniversary, but I will be 31 weeks. Looks like I need to call the company tomorrow and ask some questions...
  • This weekend will probably  be  the only  vacation  we get. We're taking the kids for our first family vacation  to Victoria. We've never gotten away as a family and figured it was  probably time to do that. It's just been too expensive  to be able to travel much/if at all so I'm really  looking forward to finally going somewhere.
  • We don't have anything specific planned. We'll probably go to Charleston for a couple of long weekends over the summer. We have been planning to go to Boston for a Red Sox game (DH is a huge fan) since David Ortiz is retiring.

  • We planned a Baltic region cruise for June before we decided to TTGP, so I guess that will count as a baby moon. I'm a little worried about food options and safety, but I'm super excited to see so many different places. I'll be in Italy the week before for work so I'm hoping I'm not too exhausted to do lots of sightseeing. I'll also be traveling back to the US 3 times between now and due date, so I'll really be putting those plane travel tips to the test.

  • @moosette113 We went to the Baltic for a belated honeymoon - I loved it!! Especially Estonia. The only "dangerous" food is mushrooms if you're not used to eating wild ones. Try the saltibarsciai - SO good.

We are going to Madeira in two weeks (I'll be 10-11 weeks). Then I'll be in Portugal, Northern Norway and Austria for work/weddings the last week of 2nd trimester /1st week of third trimester. These trips were all planned ahead of time so I'm super excited it is all working out  :)

As far as an actual Babymoon, I am hoping to spend a week in August in the Black Forest or Alps. Cabin for the two of us and the dog . Still have to convince DH though!

  • We want to take a babymoon but we're not sure where or when yet.  We're doing a weekend in Florida in May for a wedding and likely Colorado for 4th of July, but want to do something a bit "bigger" as well since this will likely be the last chance we have to do some long-haul travel for a while.  I'd love to do a beach resort getaway but DH is not a huge fan and most of the places I'd want to go have Zika anyway.  :-(  Hawaii sounds amazing but it just feels really far.  We would LOVE to do Paris and I think we have the travel points to make it happen  -- we'd just have to make sure that it works for us financially, figure out when to go, and then likely commit to taking a whole week of work off.  We shall see .  .  .
