Re: Weaning ?

  • Recommendations in the U.S. Are to start solids between 4 and 6 months (so 16-24 weeks) based on your child's development...for example, being able to sit up with support. In the end you're the momma though!

  • I would ask your pediatrician. Mine told me that we will probably get the ok for cereal at his 4 month, any other food at 6 months

This was roughly 3 years ago, but I started DS on rice cereal when he was 3 months because I thought he wasn't getting enough formula. The pediatrician told me not to start solids until he was 6 months because his weight was fine. I think he mentioned something like if a baby has reflux of some sort they start them on some solids early on because it stays in their tummy better. He said if baby doesn't have reflux or GERD and weight is fine wait until at least 4-6 months or until he has good head control. You don't want baby to gag/choke on food if your LO isn't ready.

I plan on starting DD with oatmeal or rice cereal at the 4 month mark. She has great head control and her weight is great, but she eats like a pig!

  • They keep changing their minds, I'm from Scotland and it's the same here used to be 12 weeks now it's 20 weeks slowly going up!
I think unless milk isn't satisfying your baby or your baby is reaching towards your food trying to eat it then it's not necessary but I've heard loads of people over here doing it at 10 weeks+ so talk to your HV and see what you choose then :)
  • Depends on pediatrician, most say 6 months minimum but I've seen pediatricians give the okay 3-4 months. Just ask your doctor they'll know more :) I'm in no rush to start baby food yet, I plan to wait until 6 months. But every baby is different some might need more to fill them up.
  • We're nowhere close to that here.   (11.5 weeks) I'll probably start some solids between the 6-9 month mark if he seems interested.  I'm in no hurry.  The makeup of breastmilk changes at around 6 months to contain more antibodies so I am very interested in making sure babe gets all of that goodness!
  •  @kelseyofanne Something to consider, at least here, it's recommended breastfed babies start receiving iron around 6 months. This is usually accomplished with iron fortified cereal. If you wait longer you might ask your doctor about suppliments.

    This.

Plus, keep in mind that it is not an all or nothing scenario. You usually would give them 1 small bowl to start with and work up from there. Breast milk/formula is still their main food for quite a long time after you start introducing solids, so your LO will still be getting all of that goodness. :)

And with the infant cereal you can mix expressed milk or formula into it.

They've actually even started leaning towards no solids before six months because they're not really necessary until then.

It's interesting that you say this. Here in Canada (at least, where I am), it seems to be leaning the other way. Pretty much everyone I knew who had babies around the same time as my girls were born (6-8 years ago) introduced solids at 6 months. However, most of the people I know who had babies around the same time as my boys were born (the last 3 years) are introducing solids closer to 4 months.

This has links to the organizations that suggest waiting until 6 months. Now, this is assuming a baby is exclusively breastfed. I'm not sure how it differs for formula fed babies.

Exactly what I was going to say about EBF babies. Seems like everyone (except me and DH) is anxious about my 10 week old starting on purée. I quote and translate "Food before 1, just for fun"
still didn't stop my sil from sticking frosting in DD's mouth last week.

Believe me, I am aware of that! Perhaps I should clarify that I didn't start DS1 on solids until well after he was 6 months for that very reason. I'm with @rmarie13...not anxious to start at all! I would rather put it off for as long as I reasonably can.

I was talking more about how those recommendations have translated into reality in my area/circle of friends and family. Again, this is Canada I'm referring to, so the recommendations are likely different here. Especially since I'm pretty sure the people I'm thinking of were following their doctor's advice and didn't just decide on their own to introduce solids earlier.

I had a discussion with my mom about this back when we were starting DS on solids. She suggested from something she'd seen at that time that babies are developing and hitting milestones earlier on average than they used to. They may just be ready sooner.

We're also always learning. When my brother was a baby (early 80s) the recommendation was nothing but milk until 1 year. By the time I was born in the late 80s/early 90s the recommendation in the area had changed to 6 months partly because they found it was an easier time developmentally for infants to learn spoon feeding. My mom has talked about how much difference it was. Just in our area in the last year since having DS they're now starting to push vitamin D supplements for BF babies.

Whether it's the babies, or we're learning and altering recommendations it is interesting to think about and wonder what all factors have fed into the changes.
