Rubbing Face While Sleeping

LO has started waking himself up from rubbing his face while he sleeps. Not sure if this is just a weird baby thing or he's itchy. He has always had patches of dry skin on the one side of his face but the pedi never seemed concerned.
He never does it during the day which leads me to believe is a sleeping thing. But the constant wake ups from it are getting old lol.

Anyone else?

Re: Rubbing Face While Sleeping

  • Yes! Mine rubs her face when she is very sleepy or sleeping. If her pajamas don't cover her hands I've started putting socks over her hands (I haven't been able to find baby mittens anywhere). This helps her from scratching her face. I've also found that 75% of the time if I gently rub her face where she was scratching/rubbing then she will stop.

  • My LO started rubbing his eyes. I freaked out yesterday because his eyelid and the skin around his eye was red and I couldn't figure out what was wrong. Then I realized he was rubbing his eye because he was tired and relaxed (and tried to put him to bed which took another 2 hours because bedtime is a fight but whatever)
  • My LO has done this since she was one month old...I used hand mittens for awhile...now I find that if while I'm rocking her or walking with her when she is tired (because it is also a fight to get her to sleep) if I have a very soft blanket touching her face or wrapped around the top part of her head she loves that and grabs the blanket instead of her face...she also likes to bury her face as well. This worked for my LO, I hope you find a method that works for your LO too!
  • Oh! Guys, my girl was up all night last night because we would rock her to sleep and the minute we put her down, she would wake up and rub her eyes until she was fully awake and screaming- I thought we were alone!
  • LO constantly has rosy red cheeks because he now sleeps on his stomach and I'm assuming he's drooling and rubbing his face in it. It doesn't seem to wake him up though. I try to put Aquaphor on his red spots a few times a day.

I can say that I got him up from a nap earlier because he was crying and clearly awake and not going back to sleep, but he rubbed his eyes for the next 30 minutes straight until it was time for him to eat again. He's full now, but he's still ill and yawning. Trying to get him to nap, but he's not having it...

My DD rubs her face and eyes when she wakes up and when she gets tired. I think it's a normal thing. I too rub my eyes when I'm tired!

@doodleoodle we have these and they work great!  https://www.amazon.com/Gerber-Unisex-Baby-Newborn-Mittens-Months/dp/B00PZVE384/

He's in a zipadeezip so luckily I don't have to resort to mittens but the rubbing himself until he's awake is becoming an issue. Not sure if I should go back swaddling his arms down or if he's rubbing his face now because he couldn't before and it will stop eventually.

I don't think I could handle the stress of giving him a blanket to sleep with at night. Even though it would probably help because he loves grabbing onto blankets and cloths and rubbing his face on his soft lamb mat. Ugh kids! Just sleep like a normal person lol
