HSG and IUI in same cycle

Hello! This is my first time posting and I am hoping to get some insight for my first IUI. My husband and I have been tcc for over a year now and we met with an RE last week. The RE suggested that we move forward with an IUI after my husband's SA came back with a count of 5.9 million. She said this was on the low end but it would be okay to go ahead with the IUI. My OBGYN had originally told me that based on my lab work and ultrasound she believed I had PCOS and was not ovulating. The RE told me that everything looked fine after reviewing the same results. It was a whirlwind of emotions but my husband and I made the choice to trust the RE and go forward with the IUI. I started Letrozole on cycle day 5 and I am now on cycle day 9. On cycle day 11, I am supposed to go in for an HSG to check everything. I am concerned about having the HSG so close to the IUI. I'm supposed to go for the trigger shot on Saturday and then for the IUI on Sunday. Did anyone else have their HSG and IUI this close together? Also, from what I read, many people get the trigger shot 2 days before the IUI. Does it seem like mine is happening too soon. It seems like everyone's situation is a bit different but I was just wondering if anyone had a similar schedule and have success.
I am not sure how many times my husband and I can afford to do this procedure so I want to make sure we do everything we can to be successful the first time!

Re: HSG and IUI in same cycle

  • My RE has always said that some people experience increased fertility after the hsg so I wouldn't worry about it. The only thing I was thinking is that it may make it a little more uncomfortable if you have multiple mature follicles, but that's usually not as big of a problem with letrozole. You actually want to have your IUI done before you ovulate (so the sperm is there when the egg drops) so the day after is usually the best day. Most people ovulate within 24-48 hours of the trigger. Some clinics (including mine) will do another IUI the second day after trigger if the sample isn't great. You could always ask about that if you are concerned.

  • With my IUI, I had the appointment the day after the trigger, so I think you are okay. :) The IVF trigger (for me) was 36 hours before though. It seems that every doc has a different protocol. Best of luck!
