Orienting the nanny

I have the nanny coming for a full day of getting to know the baby, our semi schedule and how everything works.  I don't want to tell her how to do every little thing but I'm pretty detail oriented...I don't want her to think i don't trust her judgement.  So I was thinking of showing her everything and telling her the basics and then just have her care for the baby while I clean and such.  Then she can ask questions...and I can watch without being overbearing.  I go back to work on Monday and DH and I haven't even gotten a morning routine down...I'm kind of freaking out.  Anyone else with a nanny go through this whole orientation process? What was your strategy?

Re: Orienting the nanny

  • No nanny but we did go through an orientation of sorts with both my parents (especially my dad since he lives so much closer) with DS getting ready before DD was born. He stayed here with me and helped me take care of DS to learn his routine and how we do things. He was about 12 months when we started so he has a slightly more set routine as far as meal times but the idea is the same.

We spend some time where he'd shadow me and watch how I handled things and learn where everything was. Since I'm fairly set on how I like to do things this was easier than me hovering and chiming in constantly. Then when my dad was comfortable he started taking over more and more to the point he was doing it and just asking questions if he needed something.

  • I'm having a friends daughter (she's like my niece) watch DS 2 days a week. I had her come over one day and I went over a few things with her. I also wrote a short manual including everything I think she'll need to know in caring for DS. Luckily my husband works out of the house next door so if she has any problems she can call him.
  • A manual! Now that's my kind of thing! @asmith40 what kinds of things did you include?
