No it doesn't work as a stand alone name. Would you name a kid Nickel, Quarter or Dollar?
It is a cute nick name though.
Thanks for your feedback. That's what I thought too but DH thinks it works for a full name. I also don't love it with our last name, since it also starts with a P.
Anyone have suggestions for P girls names? I'm not sure how I feel about P names with our last name but we would be naming after a family member so I might have to compromise on that front.
Thanks for the suggestions. I actually just thought of a compromise way of avoiding the double P (first and last name) but still honoring family. We're Jewish and our kids get an English and a Hebrew name. DH prefers that the names are either the same in English and Hebrew (like Chana, Talia, etc) or that there's a direct translation (like Judah is Yehuda since there no J in Hebrew). Anyway, the Hebrew name we were talking about using was Penina and he said he would compromise and we could name her Penny in English and her Hebrew name would still be Penina. I just don't like Penny.
Then I thought about naming her Nina in English and her Hebrew name could still be Penina. Not sure if he'll actually go for it but I think I really like it!
Sorry this is so long! What do you think of Nina as a full name?
I like Nina a lot! I knew one in high school and she was a star softball player, so I picture a strong, beautiful girl. Hopefully your DH will go for it!
Is Nina pronounced 'nee-nah' or 'ni-na'? I only ask because I always assumed 'nee-nah' was the only way. I know a great grandma who's name is pronounced 'ni-na'!
Like PP I love Nina and like Penny as a nickname for Penelope. It works as a stand-alone name, but I prefer it as a nn. Also, just fyi Penny always makes me think of Inspector Gadget (his niece).
I'm not a fan of Penny. I am probably the minority that thinks Penelope is a gross name- don't know why, it just reminds me of a pig. Was there a Penelope Pig in a children's book when I little? lol

I love your options of Penina or Nina.
Thanks! If we decided to use Penina, I think I could pursuade DH to go with Nina over Penny. In addition to it being a nickname to me, it also sound terrible with our last name.
I feel like I'm definitely in the minority on these boards, but I firmly feel that if you're going to call the child after it's "nickname", then why bother with a full name. We're naming our daughter (due in August) Willa - giving her the full name of Wilhelmina was never an option. Penny was on my short list and I see no problem with it being used as a stand alone name. I personally don't care for Penelope, but love Penny. It also ages a lot better than most nicknames, in my opinion. I know several "Pennys" who are older and the name suits them wonderfully as a mature older woman.

I think many people want to give the child the option of using the full name or an alternative NN in the future.

I'm okay with Penny as a stand-alone name (it doesn't sound overly cutesy or weirdly truncated to me, like some nicknames can), but I like your compromise to Nina, also.
Penny is my mom's name. It's not short for Penelope or anything.......just Penny. So it can stand alone as a name, just whether you like it or not.
same here, my mom's name is also Penny. I've also come across quite a few other women named Penny & not have it as a NN for something else. if you like the name Penny, i say go for it.
