3rd Trimester

Amnionic leak?

I just turned 36 weeks and this is baby number 2. I have noticed a clear fluid in my underwear but no trickle down my legs and I don't feel any gushes. I only notice a small amount in my underwear. Could this still be considered a leak? Also, tons of vaginal pressure. Thanks!

Re: Amnionic leak?

  • Why do you think it's amniotic fluid as opposed to regular discharge? When you asked your doctor, what did they say? They can do a quick test and tell you whether or not it is amniotic fluid. Your post is too vague for anyone here to have a clue: I bet there isn't a woman at 36+ weeks who doesn't have fluid in her underwear and vaginal pressure everyday.

  • Go in and have them do a fern test if you can't tell the difference.
  • If you think you are leaking amniotic fluid, please go to L/D.

  • It's worth having it checked if you're concerned, but increase of discharge is crazy in the third trimester. Not to mention, there's a lot of pee leaking sometimes as well.
I didn't have any issues with discharge until after 30 weeks and suddenly I needed to constantly wear panty liners.
Pressure can also be very normal, but the only person who can tell you if you're leaking amniotic fluid is your doctor.
  • Amniotic fluid will have a slightly sweet smell and feel kind of mucusy (touch it between your first finger and thumb, pull your fingers apart and it should kinda of string. If that makes sense) Call your ob or get checked if your concerned.
  • if you think it's amniotic fluid you should go to l&d .. this happened to me at 39 weeks and when they tested it it came back negative for amniotic fluid but said I was leaking "something" and they ended up inducing me
  • As long as it is clear and doesn't have a funny smell, you shouldn't have to go to L&D.  If it is your fluids it seems like it's leaking so little that the hole would be near the top of your uterus and it may patch itself up.  Drink lots of water, you can call the doc to maybe see if you are dilated, and just keep an eye to make sure there is no meconium present.  Obviously if you get a gush then labor may be close behind.  And since you're not 37 weeks they will tell you to come in because your baby would be "premie"
