Re: Randoms!

  • So in my house my toddler is sick with RSV (mild at this point) and last night I think I got a total of 2 hrs of sleep. God help me tonight. My husband is away at work for the week so it's all on me. Lol.

  • DH and I just moved across the country (we live in Canada) about 4 weeks ago! He has been working (we moved for his job) but I haven't started yet. I have to write an exam on the 16th and need a 75% to pass. I'm nervous for it and having a hard time concentrating with this news!!
The job is great with awesome benefits. Here's hoping I can keep it a secret from them for a few months at least!

  • @nauticallife ugh that sounds awful. Here's hoping that your little one gets better soon so you can get some sleep!

@kristah2 Good luck! FX that all goes well with the exam! How does it work in Canada with maternity leave? Do you have to work at the place for a certain length of time before you can take leave?
  • @kristah2 I'm so jealous of the Canadian maternity leave! What do additional benefits look like?

@peachykeen17 you basically need enough hours for the government to say you can take time off and then te government is who pays you. It's just like employment insurance!
i took employment insurance from June - October last year (DH had a serious injury and needed constant care so j had to stay home with him) so I have to hope I'll have enough hours punched before mat leave again.
Thanks for the luck! I'll need it !

@nauticallife benefits aren't bad! For the most part our health care is paid for and my new job is with an insurance company so my benefits are crazy!! I'm really lucky. The government doesn't pay much for Mat leave unfortunately. But at least it's something !

    Edit for nauticallife!

Nice! If you don't mind me asking, do you get paid your same wage? Like here, at my job, when I take short term disability for maternity leave I get paid at 70% my normal rate. Thats for my company though, I know its different for different places.
  • @peachykeen17 in Canada mat leave isn't done through a company and rather the government. All your company does Is promise your job for 1 year. The government pays up to 90% but it depends on a lot. Last time I was making 70% of my salary too and they didn't even give me a full year of coverage. Mat leave they have to so sometimes the amount they give you is less (I believe the minimum is 50%)
if any more Canadian mommy' join they can certainly correct me on any of this! I just know from EI
  • @kristah2 Thanks for the info/clarification. I find other countries mat leave practices to be so interesting. Probably since I'm only guaranteed 12 weeks here but 6 paid. Having a year guaranteed is crazy to think about. I honestly don't know if I would take it all. I wonder how many women actually take the full year.
  • I would've taken the full year in a heartbeat with DS. Going to work that first day was just horrible, especially while breastfeeding. I thankfully talked to my boss and now work 3 days from home, but I was so envious of the Canadian mommies on my last bmb. I wish the US had it. I also don't want them to take anymore taxes though. Totally plausible, right?!

  • @kristah2 I live in Canada, but I have a unique situation. I've been in the States for the past 5 years, we just moved back here full-time in October. Plus, I am self-employed. We're planning for me to take some time off and then eventually I will continue working from home.
  • So many Canadian babies on this board! I'm also Canadian, and I'm sticking it out at my current job until baby #1 is here because they will top up my EI to 86% for the first six months. I'm so grateful to have a full year off to spend with my little, I don't think I could leave him/her any earlier than that!

H and I do a weekly date night every Friday, so tonight I'm making a pesto chicken pasta dish then we're going to Carter's to buy "grandma" and "grandpa" onesies for H's parents.  We're going over to their house tonight to tell them the news :)

Saturday morning I have to go in for my second beta draw, then H and I are going to my nephew's basketball game and seeing my family.  I told them all the news last night so they're all excited to see me.

Not a lot going on this weekend but I'm excited for it.

  • We have a friend visiting from Toronto so we are having some people in for drinks and heading downtown Saturday night... Stay tuned on how I manage to hide not drinking from them all.
Tomorrow morning we have brunch resos at a really nice breakfast spot. We made them 2 weeks ago because they are impossible to get in. They have a full table of cakes and pastrys. Hopefully I'm feeling hungry!!
  • This is actually the first weekend in a long time that we don't have a ton of plans. I think we will stay in tonight and watch a movie. Tomorrow we are getting together with friends for game night. No plans for Sunday!
  • so much fun @shallowseas ! Do your H's parents know about your struggles? They're going to be so excited!!! Good luck at your second beta draw!

ooo @EDK2010 do you know which movie?  BTW gals, go to the movies as much as possible.  I think MH and I have gone one since DS was born.

They had no idea we were even trying.  It was hard for me to talk about what we were going through and I didn't want a lot of questions and 'advice' from people, so aside from my parents, I told 3 other friends and that was it.  It's going to be a HUGE surprise to them.  H is an only child so its their first grandbaby!  My parents knew we had been trying for 15 months but when I told my mom, she bawled on the phone for a few minutes and kept repeating, "I knew it would happen.  This is just the best news ever!"

  • We have a 4 year old's birthday party tomorrow and then I'm going out with some girlfriends for a going away party.  No idea how I'm going to explain why I'm not drinking without them being super suspicious.  How do you guys handle that?  I don't like lying if someone asks me flat out, but I'm so not ready to tell anyone yet.

Other than that, just getting ready for Disney next week!  I'm super excited - DS has a paper ring chain countdown and he's really excited.  I guess no Space Mountain for me, though.
  • @nauticallife I'm not sure yet! We have an android box with kodi so we have endless movies to choose from.

@kyakel I'm also going to have to explain to our friends tomorrow night why I am not drinking. I plan to just say that I'm taking a break from drinking for a bit (that's not a total lie!) and that I'm also the DD. DH and I take turns being DD, so they won't question that.
  • I think I'm going to use the DD card too if we're at a friends! I also get migraines a lot so my second go to will be "I've been suffering with a migraine all day (or yesterday) and don't want to trigger it again (or I can't drink with my migraine meds)"
tomorrow night I think I'm going to whip up a blender of Virginia daiquiris! No one will know the difference. It's not out of the ordinary for me to drink something like that and I'm not a huge drinker so it's totally normal if I only have 2-3 and say no to shots etc.
  • @shallowseas your parents reaction made me tear up - dang pregnancy hormones!

@kyakel I said I've been drinking way too much lately and just feel like crap because of it so I'm taking a break.  Everyone's been there.  Also SO jealous! I love disney! How old is your DS?

  • Thanks for the suggestions!  I volunteered to be the DD tomorrow night, so hopefully they won't question it.

@nauticallife my DS turned 2 in November.  We really wanted to do a Disney trip before baby #2 and I think he's at a really fun age for it!
  • We tell the inlaws the big news tonight. I wrapped up a little hat and card and put in in with gifts for them we got on vaction. Super excited.

  • @nauticallife tell me about it! I am not a crier at all but everything makes me want to cry haha.  I guess I have to get use to it.

  • @RBrown08 so sweet! Keep us updated on their reaction!
I love hearing all the reactions from our loved ones!! Keep em coming ladies!
  • We aren't telling until our first ultrasound, which is so not what we did last time. I basically told my mom the day I got a positive. I might die between now and then, haha.

Today I realized how much of a mom I am: I picked up my nephew's girlfriend for a funeral and told her she needed a coat. I used to be the cool one (insert laughing/crying emoji)

  • @ShallowSeas the crying never goes away! I never used to cry and every since I had DS I'm just plain old emotional. It's the worst.

Oh, but we're going to have DD wear a big sister shirt to dinner on Easter :)

  • We didn't tell anyone until the first ultrasound last time either... But I feel like I'm going to have a harder time hiding symptoms this time. Especially if I start getting morning sick. My mom lives with me when my husbands at work and babysits DS while I work. Hiding it is basically impossible, but I'm trying!

Sometimes I'll just get lost in the bowels of youtube watching people tell their loved ones that they are pregnant... or soldiers coming home... you know, anything that makes me sob like a little baby.
  • I'm also Canadian but I won't be taking maternity leave since I don't work. I'm a full time student (medicine) and I can only take up to six weeks off without losing my year. I'm going to only take a few weeks off to recover from my c/s and then go back to it. My husband will be taking 8 months paternity leave and then he'll probably stay home until I'm in residency (2018.)

I told my sister via text and she was so excited. I told my mom via phone and she started telling me her own pregnancy horror stories  . I also told my brother via phone and he was happy but not sure what to say because he's an awkward teenager. I'm telling one of my best friends tonight! I don't think I can keep this a secret at all.
  • I leave for a work trip to Las Vegas tomorrow with my boss and direct report.  How to hide that I'm not drinking from them will be interesting.  I did it two years ago but I'm sure my boss will catch on quick. Oh well!

  • I just realized that this baby will be born AT my school. As in, on campus, in the university medical centre where I have tutorials, anatomy lab, and clinical skills. It's the regional high risk centre. While I have no problem with classmates and preceptors being aware of the fact that I'm pregnant (and I plan to disclose to my preceptors pretty much immediately for safety reasons) I REALLY don't want anyone who is involved in my education being involved in my care since I don't want them having access to my medical records.

On the plus side, I guess I won't have to miss tutorials. I can just have my classmates come to my room while I'm there after my caesarean haha.

Eeeew. After I quit a few years ago, I simply can't stand the smell. It nauseates me terribly, even when not pregnant.
