Infertility

Bad appointment

I feel so defeated. I honestly think I'm just done.

We were all set to go for IVF with ICSI next cycle. Today was our appointment to sign the consent with our doctor and get all of the medication.

We get to our appointment and he starts to look at my file on the computer. Then he stops and says....

"Wait.... we can't do this today. I didn't realize you have had 4 miscarriages. You'll need embryo testing which we don't do here."

ARE.YOU.F'ING.KIDDING.ME?!  How did you not realize??! I've been with your clinic for over 6 months!!

I'm so upset. We're now being transferred to a clinic associated with a large university medical hospital, and their wait list just to SEE someone is 6 months. Not to mention the additional costs with embryonic testing, and the fact that it's 2 hours away.

It's obviously not my doctor's fault that I need genetic testing on the embryos, but I have no idea why he let us get this far before telling us we needed genetic testing on the embryos. We've been discussing IVF with him for months!

Re: Bad appointment

  • I'm so sorry to hear, I can totally feel your frustration.
This is very important to you and your DH and with a message like this you'll feel like they kicked you while you were already down.

Can by any chance your doctors office push you faster through the system as they have made a mistake?

  • Oh no! How frustrating, annoying, defeating, etc - I am mad at your dr for you! That is ridiculous that he wasn't aware of your medical history and just changed things on a dime! I would be FURIOUS! Are there any other clinics you can research and maybe get into sooner? Or I would (well, have my DH since I am too passive) DEMAND that your current RE work with the clinic he is referring you to and get you put on a priority list if possible or something since it was HIS screw up! You should not have to put things on hold for 6 months because your RE didn't review your file.

Hang in there - keeping you in my thoughts.

  • Thanks to both. I really appreciate. I had no idea what genetic testing on embryos (PGD) even was until this afternoon. I'm starting to research it now and it's overwhelming. It's not without controversy or risk, and I have no idea would my doctor would say I NEED it. It should be up to my husband and I to decide.

  • You are right. Your doctor can recommend it and give you his thoughts on it etc. but ultimately it is up to you and your DH to decide if it is something you event want to do. I know plenty of people that have had it done where it wasn't recommended b/c they wanted piece of mine and others where it has been recommended but they opted out due to their beliefs and/or cost of it.
  • Wow. So sorry to hear of your disappointment. I agree, speak with the Doctor to see if he can contact the university clinic to speed up the process. If the testing isn't covered, perhaps your clinic could also speak with your  insurance company to inform them that the testing is necessary due to multiple MC's. Even though insurance company's usually require genetic issues for coverage, this seems like your circumstance is just as acceptable for them to cover the expense.

My DH had to have Micro TESE surgery to extract his sperm and it was not covered by my insurance. It would've been $10,000 and had to be paid up front! Since that would've been our only hope to retrieve his sperm for IVF, the office fought for coverage and it was approved. I didn't even have to make one phone call! Doesn't hurt to try. FX for you!
