Concerned about Gross Motor

My LO will be 24 weeks on Saturday. She can roll from back to front but only onto her right side. I've never seen her roll to her left side. Also, when she's on her tummy, she goes into a "skydive" position with arms behind her rather than putting her arms in front or attempting to use them for support. She can sit up with support and has good head control but it's still a little wobbly. We joke that it's because she's got such big cheeks. Do you think I should be concerned? I know babies develop at different rates.

  • I wouldn't be concerned, but if you are, I would talk to your doc. My daughter is 5.5 months old and prefers to roll to her right. She has rolled to her left, but it is a very rare occurrence. Babies are still working on hand/eye coordination and body awareness at this point.

  • I agree with PP - check in with your doctor to be sure (they might even have ideas for specific things you can do to aid baby's development), but I wouldn't be too worried, especially since your baby IS rolling to the one side. I've heard that often babies personalities can lead what developmental milestones they tend to hit first - more socially inclined babies might start babbling first while physically inclined babes might be rolling and crawling everywhere. I would just keep working on those skills - tummy time with toys just out of reach, helping baby to sit with some assistance, and using desired toys to help baby get interested in rolling to the other side. I would also be sure to limit time in swings or other devices that limit baby's movement.
