Any truths to "more fertile" after HSG

Before going to my first appointment with a fertility doctor, my Obgyn has sent me for an HSG after having an ultrasound, blood work and semen analysis on my husband. All the tests came back normal. I have heard that people say they are more fertile after the HSG. My doctor said that some people do feel that way but it's not scientifically proven. Does anyone have any experience with this?
My doctor also says that he suggests patients take the month off of trying after an HSG because their is radiation in your body. That made sense to me but it was a little discouraging to think about even missing one month!!

Re: Any truths to "more fertile" after HSG

  • Hey @Stuuuaaart so Im a little confused. In your post from the 22nd you said you were just getting an ultrasound and that your period was actually due this Thursday (today). I recall several of us mentioned that this would be an inappropriate time to do an HSG since there was a chance you could be pregnant. Did your Dr know when you ovulated or even ask you what day of your cycle you were on before scheduling the HSG? Did you let him know there was a possibility you were pregnant before they did the test? Also I have never heard of a Dr recommending not trying the month you get an HSG due to any radiation that might still be in your body. The amount that is used is so minimal it would not have an effect on an egg that was released after the procedure was completed. There are a few inconsistencies in your posts that have me confused, but if in fact you did have an HSG after you ovulated and during a time in which you could be potentially pregnant then I would highly question the intelligence of your Doctor for letting that happen and I would look for a new Dr soon.

To answer your original question yes there has been some correlation between having an HSG and slightly increased fertility in the months that follow.

  • My OB explained that some women can have fibrous areas of their tubes (usually due to previous infection or inflammation) and its theorized that injecting the tubes with the contrast can push those fibery-fingers out of the way. He said he's seen a lot of women get pregnant after HSG even though it's not meant to be anything but a diagnostic procedure.

  • No there aren't any inconsistencies. I just had an ultrasound the other day, which is fine if I was pregnant, then he recommended an HSG. I was supposd to get my period today but I got it yesterday.
